Abstract:

The present invention relates to the field of medical devices used in the procedures of orotracheal or nasotracheal intubation. Oral or nasal endotracheal intubation procedures are commonly employed to secure a controlled airway and to deliver inhalant oxygen, anesthetic gases, and other therapeutic agents into the trachea and lungs of human and veterinary patients. Such intubation procedures carry a significant risk of dental injury resulting from contact between the laryngoscope blade used for visualization during intubation. The present invention provides an apparatus to reduce dental injury including a modified laryngoscope blade and a disposable insert which is designed to be received and retained in a single step by the modified laryngoscope blade. The disposable insert may be quickly secured by the user, and reduces both direct pressure and shear forces on the maxillary incisor teeth when the laryngoscope blade is placed in a patient's mouth during intubation.

Abstract:

Various embodiments of the present invention are directed to a device for the reduction perceived pain in patients. Various embodiments comprise a flexible shell comprising a pliable material and a first non-planar surface and a second surface opposite the first surface. The flexible shell defines an interior cavity located intermediate the first surface and the second surface and filled at least in part by a first substance. The first surface comprises a plurality of protrusions distributed therein and configured to be depressed into the skin of the patient. The pain reducing device may execute a cooling functionality upon being moved from a first position to a second position. When cooled and depressed against the patient's skin, the pain reducing device provides a sensory confusion sensation to the patient, thereby reducing perceived pain caused by a needle insertion.

Abstract:

Various embodiments of the present invention are directed to a device for the reduction of needle insertion site pain in patients. Various embodiments comprise a shell defining a hollow interior cavity filled at least in part by a freezable substance. The shell defines a first surface and a second surface opposite the first surface, and a passage extending through the shell between the first surface and the second surface, wherein the passage is configured to at least partially surround a needle insertion site while a needle is inserted therethrough. At least one of the first and second surfaces comprise a plurality of protrusions distributed therein and configured to be depressed into the skin of the patient. When chilled and depressed against the patient's skin, the freezable device provides a sensory confusion sensation to the patient, thereby reducing perceived pain caused by the needle insertion.
