The mother, Katrina Smith, is said to have been offered a deal back in 2000 where she would have received 4 years if she pleaded guilty. That would have had her free before her son was even out of high school rather than still serving a 20-year term.
Katrina Smith and Minnie Pearl Thomas, Demaryius' mother and grandmother, respectively, have been in prison since 2000. They were convicted of conspiracy to possess crack cocaine with the intent to distribute, according to USA TODAY Sports.
"Kentucky has done a lot of work toward this, actually a few years ago, we had the grade of an F. So, we have done some things that are bringing us along on this, and of course toward our goal of 9.6 percent," said Katrina Smith, State Director of Programs, March of Dimes.
