Abstract:

Described is a process for separating an organic phase comprising mainly propyl bromide from a crude reaction mixture formed by free-radical catalyzed hydrobromination of propylene with hydrogen bromide. The process comprises (A) feeding cold water into an upper or mid-portion of a packed column; (B) concurrently feeding the crude reaction mixture into an upper portion and/or mid-portion of the column so that the water contacts the crude reaction mixture; to form a mixture of (i) an acidic aqueous phase comprising aqueous hydrogen bromide and (ii) an organic phase comprising propyl bromide; (C) withdrawing the resultant phases from said column, at a rate comparable to the feeds being made into the column; and (D) separating the phases to form an upper acidic aqueous phase comprising aqueous hydrogen bromide superposed on a lower liquid organic phase comprising propyl bromide, and separating these upper and lower phases from each other.

Abstract:

Linear 1-olefins are prepared from internal olefins by (i) reacting them in the presence of an isomerization catalyst and a tri-lower alkyl aluminum so as to cause internal olefin to isomerize to 1-olefins which displace the lower alkyl groups to form a trialkyl aluminum compound in which at least one of the alkyl groups is a linear alkyl derived from the 1-olefin, and, thereafter, (ii) reacting the trialkyl aluminum compound with a 1-olefin so as to displace the linear alkyl from the trialkyl aluminum compound, thereby forming a linear 1-olefin product which is substantially free of internal olefins.

Abstract:

In a first embodiment this invention relates to a process for preparing a white product which principally contains a bisimide. The process comprises: providing tetrabromophthalic anhydride and a solvent in a reaction vessel; forming, at a temperature within the range of from about 140. degree. C. to about 200. degree. C. , a reaction mass by adding a diamine, a diamine salt or a mixture thereof to the solution, the formation of the reaction mass resulting in the production of a bisimide precipitate which becomes a component of the reaction mass; terminating the addition of the diamine when the molar ratio of the tetrabromophthalic anhydride initially present in the solution to the diamine or diamine salt added is substantially stoichiometric; cooking the bisimide precipitate to increase the average sphericity of the particles making up the bisimide precipitate; and recovering from the reaction mass, as the bisimide product, the cooked precipitate. In a second embodiment the cooking step is optional and the retention of water formed during the diamine or diamine salt addition is featured.

This invention relates to a process for preparing a white bisimide product which principally contains N,N'-alkylene-bis(tetrabromophthalimide) or N,N'-bis(tetrabromophthalimide). The process features: providing, in a reaction vessel, a solution containing tetrabromophthalic anhydride and a solvent which contains at least about 15 weight percent of a mono-, di- or tri- carboxylic acid having a dissociation constant not higher than 1. times. 10. sup. -3 at 25. degree. C. , such formation of the reaction mass resulting in the production of a bisimide precipitate which becomes a constituent of the reaction mass; during the formation of the reaction mass, (i) retaining, in the reaction mass, at least a portion of the water produced during such formation, (ii) maintaining a substantially constant pressure in the reaction vessel, and (iii) not allowing the temperature of the reaction mass to reach a temperature below about 135. degree. C. ; terminating the addition of the diamine or diamine salt when the molar ratio of the tetrabromophthalic anhydride initially present in the solution to the diamine or diamine salt added is from about 1.

Abstract:

This invention relates to a method for preparing a white or at least near-white product which is predominant in alkylene(C. sub. 1 -C. sub. 5)-bis-(tetrabromophthalimide). This method comprises: forming a solution which contains, as a solvent, (i) SO. sub. 3 or fuming sulfuric acid, and (ii) a haloalkane of the formula RX. sub. n, wherein R is an alkyl group containing up to two carbon atoms, X is a halogen selected independently from Br and Cl, and n is 2 or 3 when R is an alkyl containing 1 carbon atom and is 1, 2 or 3 when R is an alkyl group containing 2 carbon atoms, and, as a solute, the yellow alkylene(C. sub. 1 -C. sub. 5)-bis-tetrabromophthalimide predominant product obtained from the reaction of tetrabromophthalic anhydride and diaminoalkane is the presence of water and alkanoic acid; and adding water to said solution to precipitate therefrom the white or at least near-white product.
