Abstract:

A method of making a heat shield for an exhaust system tailpipe which comprises the steps of positioning a blank of sheet metal between a die having a forming surface of generally arcuately concave cross-sectional configuration which extends in a generally arcuately convex direction and a straight cylindrical body of elastomeric material having a longitudinal axis extending generally tangentially with respect to the arcuately convex direction of extent of the die forming surface, effecting an initial relative movement between the die and the cylindrical elastomeric body in a direction toward one another so as to compress a central portion of the sheet metal blank to a central portion of the die forming surface by a central portion of the exterior surface of the cylindrical elastomeric body while the latter is in a straight condition, and progressively flexing opposite end portions of the cylindrical elastomeric body in directions toward the end portions of the die forming surface so as to progressively compress the end portions of the sheet metal blank into conformed engagement with the die forming surface by the exterior surface of the elastomeric body and an apparatus for performing the method.

Abstract:

Improved electroless or autocatalytic gold plating baths wherein the gold ingredient is a water soluble trivalent gold component selected from an alkali metal auricyanide, an alkali metal aurihydroxide, and an alkali metal aurate. The bath contains an amino borane, an alkali metal borohydride, or an alkali metal cyanoborohydride as the reducing agent; an alkaline agent such as an alkali metal hydroxide; and an alkaline buffering agent. Optionally, the bath may contain added alkali metal cyanide. The method of utilizing such electroless or autocatalytic plating bath for depositing gold on metallic substrates such as gold, copper, copper alloys, electroless copper, electroless nickel, nickel, nickel alloys, etc. and on a non-metallic substrates is also described and claimed.

Abstract:

A gearless transmission is provided for transmitting rotational velocity from an input shaft to an output shaft without gears. The transmission includes an input shaft connected to a wedge. Both the input shaft and the wedge have rotational axes. The rotational axis of the input shaft is disposed at an angle with respect to the rotational axis of the wedge. As a result, rotation of the input shaft results in a processional motion of the axis of the wedge. The wedge engages an output plate which is connected to a universal joint which, in turn, is connected to an output shaft. The processional rotation of the wedge is transmitted to the output plate and, consequently, to the output shaft without the need for a geared or enmeshed relationship between the wedge and the output plate.

An electrolytic bath for the production of mirror bright silver deposits comprising an alkali metal silver cyanide as the source of silver; boric acid, citric acid, alkali or ammonium metal salts of such acids, as well as mixtures thereof; selenous acid or alkali metal selenite; and, in certain preferred baths, antimony in the form of an alkali metal carboxylic acid salt.
