Abstract:

A dielectric web substrate is primed for adhesion of a plastic coating by passing between two rolls in rolling contact therewith. One roll has a conductive core and an insulating jacket while the other roll has a conductive surface. A high voltage A. C. source is connected between the conductive portions of both rolls to establish a corona discharge therebetween to effect said priming. Additional rolls with conductive surfaces may be connected in parallel with the first such roll.

Abstract:

A pigment-coated paperboard is provided which comprises a paperboard substrate on which there are coextruded a top film of polyethylene terephthalate and an intermediate layer of an acrylic ester copolymer containing from about 1/2 to about 15% pigment particles. Such coated paperboard is particularly suitable for use in containers for food, for book covers, expansion envelopes, business folders and the like. When the pigment is aluminum powder, trays made from the coated paperboard are suitable for use as disposable roller print trays.

Abstract:

A composite article suitable for forming liquid-containing paperboard cartons is made by laminating an extruded thermoplastic film to an elongated paperboard web. The film has thick and thin strips and the thick strips are laminated to the web over areas thereof which are to ultimately form the bottom portions of the cartons. Thermoplastic material is regulated within an extruder and after extrusion the film takes on a profile imparted by the regulation of the material within the extruder die.

Abstract:

The invention provides a dynamic system for heat-sealing an all-plastic material in a continuous process at high speed. The invention includes an all-plastic heat-sealable container material comprising a multiple-layer composite, in sheet form, including a core layer and at least one outer layer on one side thereof. The layers preferably comprise thermoplastic material, the core layer material having a higher softening point than the outer layer material. The composite sheet is conveyed through a converting, side-seaming or other apparatus at high speed, the system being tuned to dynamically heat the outer layers to a molten state for heat sealing, while the core does not soften but remains undistorted. The core is thus thermally insensitive to heat at speeds used in side-seaming the composite, and as such it supports and maintains the structure of the sealing outer layers on its exterior while they are in a molten condition.

Abstract:

Disclosed is an improved process for extruding films of thermoplastic polyester film-forming materials. The process enables extrusion of films with reduced problems of neck-in, edge-weave and beading, by feeding a small amount of a polymer which is readily processable with the polyester into the extruder die in the area near the edges of the elongated die opening. The different polymers commingle at the edge portions and thereby provide a controllable edge. In the preferred embodiment, a small amount of a low-to-high density polyethylene is injected into the film-forming die near the edge portion of a stream of polyethylene terephthalate prior to extrusion. The resulting milky-appearing edges are preferably cut from the film, and the film is then adhered to a paperboard substrate.

Preferably the paperboard substrate is also coated on the external surface thereof with a web of heat sealable polymer. Containers constructed from such laminates are especially useful as fruit juice containers which enable significant flavor and Vitamin C retention in the liquid i. e. , fruit juice contained therein over the normal shelf life of the product.
