  • Method And System For Providing Users A Lower Fidelity Alternative Until A Higher Fidelity Experience Is Available

    view source
  • US Patent:
    7664870, Feb 16, 2010
  • Filed:
    Feb 25, 2005
  • Appl. No.:
    11/067596
  • Inventors:
Diane Baek - Redmond WA, US
Peter W. Blois - Kirkland WA, US
Andrew Shebanow - San Jose CA, US
Kenneth Wolfe - Redmond WA, US
  • Assignee:
    Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
  • International Classification:
    G06F 15/16
  • US Classification:
    709231, 709203, 709206
  • Abstract:
A method for providing a low fidelity alternative until a high fidelity experience becomes available is provided. Upon detecting a need to download data, a download manager determines a download priority for downloading the data. The download priority specifies an amount of a low fidelity representation of data to download prior to downloading a high fidelity representation of the same data and any remaining low fidelity representation of the data simultaneously. The download manager then downloads, for example, from a content server, the low fidelity representation of the data and the high fidelity representation of the data according to the determined download priority, thus allowing the low fidelity representation of the data to be used until the high fidelity representation of the data is downloaded and becomes available.
  • Breakout Rooms In A Distributed Conferencing Environment

    view source
  • US Patent:
    8300557, Oct 30, 2012
  • Filed:
    Apr 26, 2007
  • Appl. No.:
    11/789895
  • Inventors:
Dhigha D. Sekaran - Redmond WA, US
Kenneth Wolfe - Redmond WA, US
Doug Wyatt - Woodinville WA, US
  • Assignee:
    Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
  • International Classification:
    H04L 12/16
  • US Classification:
    370260, 370270
  • Abstract:
Architecture that facilitates management and control of sidebar sessions (or breakout rooms) in a distributed conferencing environment. Distributed frontends (or MCUs) are provided for multi-party access into a main conferencing session. In one implementation, the main session can then be partitioned to provide one or more sidebar sessions for side conferencing. The sidebar sessions can all be contained on a single MCU or distributed across multiple MCUs. The leader of the main session can then freely roam among the sidebar sessions of a single MCU or among the sessions on the distributed MCUs. The protocol can be SIP-based, and also or alternatively use C3P commands for creating (or adding) a sidebar session, modifying the sidebar, moving users to and from a sidebar, and deleting the sidebar session.
  • Emulation Of Room Lock And Lobby Feature In Distributed Conferencing System

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20080256182, Oct 16, 2008
  • Filed:
    Apr 10, 2007
  • Appl. No.:
    11/784922
  • Inventors:
Dhigha D. Sekaran - Redmond WA, US
Kenneth Wolfe - Redmond WA, US
Doug Wyatt - Woodinville WA, US
  • Assignee:
    Microsoft Corporation - Redmond WA
  • International Classification:
    G06F 15/00
  • US Classification:
    709204
  • Abstract:
Architecture for a session lock and lobby feature in a distributed conferencing framework for a conferencing session. Under a lock scenario, once a user enters the session, the session can be locked to prevent other individuals from entering, even if the individuals were invited to the session. Locking can be accomplished manually by a session participant and/or automatically based on criteria. The lobby feature allows a session participant to be aware of users in the lobby and pending access to the session by providing notification and/or identification of the user attempting to gain access to the session. The session leader can selectively allow access to the session. The architecture facilitates lock and lobby features in multiple identical, leaderless, conference servers which together form a distributed conferencing system. The lock and lobby features can employ media session protocols such as session initiation protocol (SIP) and centralized conference control protocol (C3P).

  • International Classification:
    G06F 17/30
  • US Classification:
    707780, 707E17014
  • Abstract:
Linking data items describing a person into a single, unified contact entry without merging the data items. The data items include, for example, contact data, social network data, and other data describing the person. The contact entry is a single representation of the person that, in some embodiments, combines a plurality of personas of the person without merging the underlying data items. Metadata representing one or more contact entries is capable of being shared across a plurality of devices and applications such that a user is presented with a consistent contact list on different devices and from within different applications. In some embodiments, the user annotates one or more of the contact entries with notes or other data that is stored with the metadata.

  • US Classification:
    705 715, 705 1411
  • Abstract:
Embodiments enable the monitoring of project plans and the selection and application of rewards to motivate users. Project plans having one or more project content items are created according to a pre-defined schema. The project plans are integrated with user data stores, such as calendar appointments, tasks, and shopping lists. Progress indicators reflecting a completion status of the project plans are calculated for the project plans. Rewards are selected based on the progress indicators and on user preferences (e.g., collected user activity data). The rewards correspond to milestones associated with the project plans, and are integrated into the user data stores when the user reaches the corresponding milestones.

The project plan is analyzed to identify the project content items that correspond to user data stores available on a computing device. The user data stores include, for example, calendar appointments, tasks, and shopping lists. The project content items are integrated with the user data stores, such as by creating calendar entries, adding tasks, and adding items to the shopping lists. A manifest is defined to describe and record the integrated project content items and the corresponding user data stores. The manifest may also be used to remove or suspend the project plan.

Embodiments modify project plans to create customized project plans for a user. A project plan having one or more project content items is created according to a pre-defined schema. The user customizes the project plan by adding, removing, and/or substituting project content items or properties (e.g., adjust the timing for accomplishing tasks). The customized project plan is analyzed to identify the project content items that correspond to user data stores available on a computing device. The user data stores include, for example, calendar appointments, tasks, and shopping lists. The project content items are integrated with the user data stores, such as by creating calendar entries, adding tasks, and adding items to the shopping lists.
