Abstract:
A thermal management system is provided. The system has a thermal management apparatus which may be disposed adjacent to and connected with a heat source. The thermal management apparatus may include a body having a porous fluid transfer element disposed therein. The body may also have a heat transfer fluid disposed therein. The heat source may create relatively liquid-rich and liquid-poor regions within the thermal management apparatus. The wicking action of the porous fluid transfer element may be used to force heat transfer fluid from liquid-rich regions toward liquid-poor regions.

Abstract:
According to one embodiment of the invention, an apparatus comprises a passive cooling system and a portion of an air vehicle which receives thermal energy. The passive cooling system is disposed adjacent the portion of the air vehicle and comprises a fluid transfer chamber. A fluid transfer element and a coolant are disposed within the fluid transfer chamber. The fluid transfer element wicks a portion of the coolant towards the portion of the air vehicle. The portion of the coolant wicked towards the portion of the air vehicle absorb at least a portion of the thermal energy in a boiling heat transfer.

Abstract:
According to one embodiment of the disclosure, a cooling system for a heat generating structure comprises a first cooling segment and a second cooling segment. The first cooling segment and the second cooling segment each respectively comprise a cooling segment conduit and at least one cooling segment tube. The cooling segment conduits are operable to receive a fluid coolant and dispense of the fluid coolant after the fluid coolant has received thermal energy. The at least one cooling segment tubes are in thermal communication with both the cooling segment conduits and the heat generating structure. The at least one cooling segment tubes have a cooling fluid operable to transfer thermal energy from the heat generating structure to the cooling segment conduits. The cooling segment conduits transfer thermal energy from the cooling fluid to the fluid coolant. A heat transfer rate associated with the first cooling segment is substantially similar to a heat transfer rate associated with the second cooling segment.

A self-contained cooling system for a phased array antenna includes a cooling structure, a heat exchanger, and a pump for circulating a fluid coolant around a coolant loop. The cooling system receives power from a remote power source. The cooling structure includes a plurality of coolant inlet pipes, a plurality of coolant outlet pipes, and a plurality of cooling platforms. Each of the cooling platforms has a coolant channel that begins at one of the plurality of coolant inlet pipes, terminates at one of the plurality of coolant outlet pipes, and provides a flow path for a fluid coolant. The cooling structure further includes at least one base plate releasably mounted to at least one of the plurality of cooling platforms. One or more antenna elements associated with the phased array antenna are mounted on the base plate releasably mounted to at least one of the plurality of cooling platforms. The flow of the fluid coolant through the coolant channel dissipates thermal energy produced by the one or more antenna elements.

Abstract:
According to one embodiment, a heat dissipation system includes an elongated radar absorbing member configured with a thermal dissipation mechanism. The radar absorbing member extends proximate a junction of a microwave antenna enclosure that houses an antenna and a radome that covers an opening in the microwave antenna enclosure. The radar absorbing member absorbs electro-magnetic energy incident upon the junction. The thermal dissipation mechanism absorbs heat generated by the absorbed electro-magnetic energy.

Robotic lightning bugs take flight | MIT News | Massachusetts Institute of Technology
for a tiny, power-constrained robot, we are forced to think about new modes of communication. This is a major step toward flying these robots in outdoor environments where we dont have a well-tuned, state-of-the-art motion tracking system, says Kevin Chen, who is the D. Reid Weedon, Jr. Assistante very energetically costly, but in a sense, we get that electroluminescence for free because we just use the electric field at the frequency we need for flying. We dont need new actuation, new wires, or anything. It only takes about 3 percent more energy to shine out light, Kevin Chen says.We are very proud of how good the tracking result is, compared to the state-of-the-art. We were using cheap hardware, compared to the tens of thousands of dollars these large motion-tracking systems cost, and the tracking results were very close, Kevin Chen says.in real-time. The team is working to incorporate control signals so the robots could turn their light on and off during flight and communicate more like real fireflies. They are also studying how electroluminescence could even improve some properties of these soft artificial muscles, Kevin Chen says.

said it was the first time they had seen this shift affect a company's quarterly results, and that any correlation to other firms would be "modest at best." Kevin Chen, an analyst with Leerink, said in aninterview that "there is a trend in Europe where there is more sharing of these major instruments.
"People don't see much need for safe-haven assets," Kevin Chen, the chief investment officer of New York-based Three Mountain Capital Management, said in a phone interview. "The jobs report is another indication that the economy is doing very well."
