Method and apparatus for deterring fraudulent use of a fixed wireless telephone, comprising sensing motion of the telephone with a motion sensor and preventing operation of the telephone after it has been placed in motion and until entry of a security code to reset operation of the telephone. Abstract:

Access control is provided for a fixed cellular terminal using a secondary power source. Upon detecting an interruption of power from a primary power source, a signal is provided to reset a non-volatile memory in the fixed cellular terminal to erase a password previously stored in the memory. A secondary power source supplies power for these functions. Upon the memory reset, a subscriber must again enter a password to use the fixed cellular terminal for gaining access to a radio network. Another embodiment of the invention includes a timer for triggering a timing interval after interruption of the primary power is detected. The memory is reset only if the timing interval expires while the primary power is still below the threshold operating level. In yet another embodiment of the invention, a microprocessor determines whether a call is in progress. The memory is reset only if the call is not in progress when the timing interval expires while the primary power is still below the threshold operating level.

Abstract:

A first PCS unit monitors carrier activity of other PCS units in an unlicensed frequency band adjacent to a licensed frequency band used by the first PCS unit, which has a microprocessor that compiles a history table of this other carrier activity. The first PCS unit then uses the history table to transmit on the licensed frequency band an interference signal synchronized with the predicted occurrence of the other carrier activity such that the permitted sideband signals of the interference signal in the adjacent unlicensed band causes the other PCS units to stop broadcasting on the adjacent unlicensed band. The first PCS unit then begins broadcasting on both the adjacent unlicensed band and the licensed band, a message being embedded in these broadcasts to advise intended receiving PCS units that both bands are now available for communication sessions with the first PCS unit.

Abstract:

A personal infrared beacon unit capable of being worn as an adornment of clothing, incorporated into a part of a person's attire, or embodied within a personal pager, a cellular phone or a 2-way data device. The beacon unit may be in communication with an established network and may be activated externally by a locator signal, or internally by activation of an emergency button. Upon activation, the beacon unit emits coded timed infrared bursts in coherent beams, and when the beams are detected, they may be decoded visually or with a decoding device to provide the identity and location of the user.

Abstract:

A system and method for providing different levels of mobile communication service for a mobile station within a communication system service area. A plurality of base transceiver stations (BTSs) are coupled to a common database. Each BTS has a cellular service area for communicating with the mobile station, a unique identification, and is located with respect to other base transceiver stations for defining a plurality of overlapping cellular service areas which collectively define the service area of the communication system. The common database has a memory for storing data related to a home geographical location associated with the mobile station, and the identity of the BTSs having service areas overlapping the home geographical location. The geometric shapes of the service areas overlapping the home geographical location of the mobile station define a home calling area. A first level of service is provided to the mobile station when the mobile station is inside the home calling area, and a second level of service when the mobile station is outside of the home calling area.

Abstract:

A communication system includes at least one mobile communication device having a message indicator device, and a voice mail messaging center. The voice mail messaging center includes a voice mailbox associated with the at least one mobile communication device. The voice mail messaging center directs a call to the voice mailbox associated with the at least one mobile communication device for recording a message when the mobile communication device is unable to receive the call. The voice mail messaging center optimizes communication from the messaging center to the mobile communication device by sending a first message indicator to the mobile communication device when a voice mail message is recorded and the voice mailbox previously contained no messages, a second message indicator when the voice mailbox is full, and a third message indicator when the voice mailbox becomes empty. The indicator device of the mobile communication device provides a first indication in response to the first message indicator, a second indication in response to the second message indicator, and a third indication in response to the third message indicator.
