  • Methods And Systems For Managing Entities In A Computing Device Using Semantic Objects

    view source
  • US Patent:
    7640267, Dec 29, 2009
  • Filed:
    Nov 20, 2003
  • Appl. No.:
    10/719002
  • Inventors:
Nova Spivack - New York NY, US
Kristinn R. Thorisson - New York NY, US
  • Assignee:
Radar Networks, Inc. - San Francisco CA
  • International Classification:
    G06F 17/00
    G06F 17/30
  • US Classification:
    707103X, 7071041
  • Abstract:
A data construct called a semcard is a semantic (meaning-based) software object including semantic meta-tags and meta-data that describes a target object or thing. A target object can be any type of digital or physical entity or identifier, or it can be tacit knowledge, such as ideas, concepts, processes or other data existing in a user's mind, provided that the user represents this knowledge in the semcard. A semcard embodies information about its own structure-rules, history, state, policies and goals regarding automation, display, access permissions, sharing and other operations of the semcard and any optional target object. It can also represent a semantic link between two semcards, or a semantically typed link or a standard Web hyperlink between a semcard and its referent target. A collection of semcards represents a knowledge network; single semcards, and knowledge networks, can be browsed, shared, searched, disseminated, manipulated, displayed, organized, and stored.
  • Method For Designing An Interactive System

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20020077726, Jun 20, 2002
  • Filed:
    Dec 15, 2000
  • Appl. No.:
    09/737426
  • Inventors:
Kristinn Thorisson - New York NY, US
  • International Classification:
    G05B019/04
  • US Classification:
    700/246000
  • Abstract:
A method of effectively designing an interactive system is disclosed. The method may preferably include the steps of (1) determining the overall scope of the desired interactive system, including available sources of input and output; (2) creating a list of desired features for the system; (3) creating a rough outline of perceptions, decisions, and actions that the system must be capable of if it is to possess the desired features; (4) designing perception features that implement the identified perception specifications and decision features that implement the decision-making process required by the identified decision specifications; (5) creating any necessary supporting components (e.g., buffers for storing data collected by perception features) to implement the perception and decision features; and (6) creating a behavior feature hierarchy that includes the action features required to implement action features of the interactive system. Each perception feature and decision feature is preferably assigned a priority level which may be a function of several factors. The present method may find particular application in designing an interactive system that implements an anytime algorithm and in designing an interactive system that implements a distributed, asynchronous architecture.

  • Abstract:
In a semcard management application, a user interface that consists of several panels that facilitate the use of semcards, the objects they represent, and the knowledge network is described. These panels include an entry point panel, a filter panel, a results panel, and a viewer. One category of entry points is referred to as “context” entry points. Contexts allow semcards to be organized into hierarchically arranged categories. After the user has created a context, this context can be used as an entry point to a set of semcards meeting a certain criteria. Another way a user can select semcards meeting certain criteria, in combination with entry points or when no specific entry points are available, is to use a filtering mechanism. This allows a user to quickly select a subset of semcards or a single semcard in an ad hoc manner. Filtering is based on a collection of filter panels and system rules. Filters allow a user to select semcards based on their semantic dimensions, meta-data (or content), and other features. Filters are input-output devices where the input is a collection of semcards or other collection of elements with semantic dimensions, and the output is typically a subset of the input. Rules and ontologies determine which features can be used for each filter panel that appears in the user interface. Filter panels can be displayed in the user interface in a non-stacked or overlaying configuration or in a stacked configuration. Other configurations are also possible, such as tree-structures, separate windows, and graph structures.
