The present invention provides an apparatus and a method for compensating for small variations in balance and alignment when supporting and rotating a massive cylindrical drum. The apparatus comprises a self-aligning flange having projections spaced 90 apart about the circumference, or rim, of the flange. The projections are inserted into sliding relationship with elongate slots within a fixed supporting frame so that the plane of the self-aligning flange is allowed to dynamically adjust to small oscillations or movements of the centerline of the rotating drum as it rotates.

Abstract:
A device for removing obstructions from a work site. The device is attachable to the front of a work machine. The device comprises a frame, a flange, a rotatable cutting member supported on the flange, and a motor that rotates the cutting member. The flange is non-rotatable, but is movable along at least one length relative to the frame. The motor may be supported on the flange. The device further comprises a plurality of removably attachable blocking members for decreasing the range of travel of debris generated during operation of the cutting member. The rotatable cutting member is movable about three axes relative to the flange such that changes in conditions or temperatures do not cause the cutting member to break.

Abstract:
A ground breaking apparatus has a vehicle with a cutter assembly attached thereto. The cutter assembly has a rotating cutter mounted to a cutter housing which is attached to and movable with the vehicle. The cutter housing has a forward door that moves between open and closed positions. A pusher bar is movable between an operating and a raised position is also included. When the door is open and the pusher bar is in the operating position, the vehicle moving forward will cause the pusher bar to engage trees which will also be engaged and cut, or ripped by the rotating cutter. The door may be closed in the direction the vehicle reversed. The cutter may be lowered so that as the vehicle moves in reverse, the rotating cutter head mulches trees into the soil and also breaks up ground fragments to prepare the soil for the desired use.
End Plate Interlock For Housing Of A Ground Breaking Machine And Method Of Mounting A Cutter Drum In The Housing
A ground breaking machine has a housing and the housing has oppositely disposed end plates which have aligned axial female openings and matching male plate portions positioned in the female openings. The female opening is defined by a side edge having top and oppositely disposed vertical spaced apart side edge portions. Each of the vertical side edge portions terminate in a laterally inwardly extending portion having an upperwardly extending hook portion engageable with a downwardly extending hook portion on the male plate portion for interlocking the female and male hook portions to prevent separation thereof and separation of the male plate portion in the female opening. The method of assembly and mounting the cutter drum in the housing includes the steps of providing a housing having oppositely disposed end plates including aligned axial openings and matching male plate portions for being positioned in the female openings. The cutter drum has a gear drive mounted in an end of the cutter drum and is provided with a hydraulic motor on one of the male plate portions. The cutter drum is positioned under the housing and the male plate portion having the hydraulic motor is positioned in the female opening in an end plate. The hydraulic motor on the male plate portion is connected to the gear drive in the end of the cutter drum.
