Abstract:
We have discovered that the topical application of the amino acid lysine and the 6-methyl derivative of lysine to Herpes simplex virus Type II is therapeutically beneficial and relieves the discomfort and symptoms of HSV infections and prevents or reduces the number of severity of HSV infections. We have also discovered that derivatives of lysine, in addition to 6-methyl lysine and derivatives of arginine have an inhibitory effect upon HSV replication. These compounds are useful in the prevention and treatment of HSV lesions.
Micro-Encapsulated Lactobacilli For Medical Applications
Micro-encapsulated lactobacilli bacteria are orally administered to mammals, including humans, to treat or prevent antibiotic associated or other chronic or acute diarrhea. Micro-encapsulated lactobacilli bacteria are topically administered to the skin to treat or prevent recurrent skin infections, and are administered intra-vaginally to treat or prevent vaginal yeast infections.

A new and improved assay for the determination of the enzyme lysozyme in biological samples which utilizes a plate assay based upon the bacterium Micrococcus lysodiekticus is described. The assay utilizes a novel composition for the assay medium which results in a reduction in assay incubation time to the point that the assay is complete after one-half hour. This reduction in time is achieved in part by the utilization of organic buffers in the assay medium and in part by the reduction of the ionic strength of the assay medium. by the use of this assay a novel technique for determining the integrity of the amniochorial membrane and maturity of fetal lungs are described.

Compounds having the formula (i), (ii) and (iii), ##STR1## where R is H, alkyl of 1 to 6 carbons, or CO--R. sub. 2 where R. sub. 2 is alkyl of 1 to 6 carbons; R. sub. 1 is H, CH. sub. 3, or (CH. sub. 2). sub. m --CH. sub. 3 ; n is an integer having the values of 2 to 10, m is an integer having the values of 1 to 6, have anti-androgen activity on secondary androgen receptor sites. The compounds are useful for treating mammals, including humans afflicted with acne, male pattern baldness, adhesions and keloids. The compounds are also effective for treating other diseases or conditions which are related to androgen receptors, such as undesirable formation of breast capsules in females after breast augmentation surgery, osteoarthritis and symptoms of Alzheimer's disease. The compounds also have inhibitory effect on the metabolism of certain microorganisms and fungi of the kind, the metabolism of which is normally known to be controllable by anti-androgen compounds.

Abstract:
A thermal reactor apparatus and method of pyrolyticaly decomposing silane gas into liquid silicon product and hydrogen by-product gas is disclosed. The thermal reactor (1) has a reaction chamber (21) which is heated well above the decomposition temperature of silane. An injecter probe (100) introduces the silane gas tangentially into the reaction chamber (21) to form a first, outer, forwardly moving vortex (22) containing the liquid silicon product and a second, inner, rearwardly moving vortex (23) containing the by-product hydrogen gas. The liquid silicon in the first outer vortex (22) deposits onto the interior walls (28) of the reaction chamber (21) to form an equilibrium skull layer (26) which flows to the forward or bottom end of the reaction chamber where it is removed. The by-product hydrogen gas in the second inner vortex (23) is removed from the top or rear of the reaction chamber by a vortex finder (30). The injecter probe (100) which introduces the silane gas into the reaction chamber (21) is continually cooled by a cooling jacket (110) having water circulating therethrough to keep the temperature of the silane gas well below its decomposition temperature prior to being introduced into the reaction zone.
