Abstract:
An apparatus for use in a wellbore may include a tool having a first section configured to receive a core and a second section configured to collect a gas escaping from the core. The apparatus may also include a sensor associated to provide signals relating to a property of gas. In one aspect, the second section may be removable and may be pressurized. The apparatus may also include a recorder that records data representative of the signals received from the sensor. The recorder may record data while the tool is retrieved from the wellbore. A method for estimating a parameter of interest of a formation includes retrieving a core from the formation, collecting a gas escaping from the core as the core is retrieved to the surface, and measuring at least one property of gas while the core is retrieved to the surface.

Abstract:
A method for estimating a property downhole is provided, which, in one aspect, may include receiving a core at a receiving end of a downhole tool while removing a portion of the received core distal from the receiving end of the tool, obtaining measurements by a sensor downhole, and processing the measurements to estimate the property of interest.
Elastomeric Bearing Pad And Seal For A Removable Bottom Founded Structure

US Classification:

Abstract:
The Removable Bottom Founded Structure (RBFS) is an offshore platform for petroleum drilling and producing operations intended for deployment in waters with severe weather and iceberg conditions. The structure is normally held down by gravity, but during the deballasting procedure a hold-down system is employed to keep the platform on the subbase until site evacuation. The system that is used to hold the platform down onto the subbase is located where the platform meets the subbase. It operates on the principle of hydrostatics. On the top surface of the subbase there are circularly arranged elastomeric bearing pads that define chambers which may be evacuated by pumping and which are vented to the outside atmosphere. Pressure by the platform on the bearing pads creates a fluid-tight seal so that no seawater will enter the evacuated chambers. The seawater evacuation causes a reduction of the buoyancy forces on the underside of the platform which will hold the platform onto the subbase until such time as the platform is totally deballasted.
Method And Apparatus For Stripping A Coating From A Wire

International Classification:

US Classification:

Abstract:
Enamel insulation is stripped from a wire 1 by abrading the enamel coating with a pressurized stream of particles such as baking power, sodium bicarbonate. The particles chip off the relatively brittle coating, while the softer underlying wire is not harmed. The wire 1 passes through a chamber 4 and nozzles 18 direct the particle stream onto the wire 1. The chamber is evacuated at an outlet 34 to draw waste particles from the chamber 4. In another embodiment, the particle stream itself is directed through an outlet at the opposite side of the wire to entrain the waste particles and exhaust them from the chamber.

The system that is used to hold the platform down onto the subbase is located where the platform meets the subbase. It operates on the principle of hydrostatics. On the underside of the columns, there are multiple chambers which may be evacuated by pumping and which are vented to the outside atmosphere. Flexible seals that define these chambers are positively engaged by water to create a fluid-tight seal so that no seawater will enter the evacuated chambers. The reduction of the buoyancy forces will hold the platform onto the subbase until such time as the platform is totally deballasted. Once that has occurred, the hydrostatic hold-down system is disengaged and the platform will quickly rise to the surface.

Abstract:
The Removable Bottom Founded Structure (RBFS) is an offshore platform for petroleum drilling and producing operations intended for deployment in waters with severe weather and iceberg conditions. It is a two-part structure comprising (1) a platform which is made up of a deck structure, multiple columns and braces; and (2) a reinforced concrete subbase that rests on the sea floor and upon which the platform is founded. The structure is normally held down by gravity for standard platform operations, but during the deballasting procedure due to an iceberg emergency a hold-down system is employed to keep the platform on the subbase until full deballasting is achieved. The system that is used to hold the platform down onto the subbase is located where the platform meets the subbase. It operates on the principle of hydrostatics. On the underside of the columns there are multiple chambers which may be evacuated by pumping and which are vented to the outside atmosphere.
