Abstract:

An apparatus for reaming a patella includes a clamp for securing the patella and a reamer. The reamer includes a depth scale to indicate a depth to which the patella has been reamed. The clamp includes a pivoting collet to enable the clamp to stably secure different patellas having a variety of shapes and sizes. The stability of the collet is ensured by a plurality of prongs on the side contacting the patella, which are arranged to be equally spaced around the peak of the patella. Using this reaming apparatus, the depth to which the patella is reamed can be accurately determined. The reamed patella can then be fitted with a prosthesis to coordinate with a femoral prosthesis fitted on a resected femur and a tibial prosthesis fitted on a resected proximal end of a tibia to form a reconstructed knee joint which is substantially at anatomic level and has a proper degree of laxity in both flexion and extension.

Abstract:

A femoral resection apparatus and method is provided for resecting at least one of the posterior, anterior, and distal surfaces of the medial and lateral condyles of a femur to provide seating surface to receive a femoral prosthesis. The apparatus includes a measuring system to determine a location of the posterior, anterior, and distal resections to be made. The apparatus additionally includes a graduated scale to measure a distance between the anterior and posterior surfaces of the femoral condyles, including markings representing different prosthesis sizes and markings in between the size markings to account for the difference between the measured distance and the nearest prosthesis size. The femoral resection apparatus and method may be used in combination with a tibial resection apparatus and method for resecting a tibial plateau to provide a seating surface to receive a corresponding tibial prosthesis. The tibial apparatus includes a measurement scale to indicate a proper resection location.

Abstract:

An apparatus for forming planar resections on the medial and lateral condyles of a femur includes a caliper feeler and measurement plate to measure for the size of the femoral prosthesis to be received, said caliper feeler and measurement plate adapted to determine a first distance between an anterior surface of the femoral cortex and a plane tangent to a posterior surface of the medial and lateral condyles of a femur. A graduated scale compares the first distance to at least two standard femoral prosthesis sizes and determines the smaller of the at least two standard femoral prosthesis sizes. A graduated scale measures a second distance between the first distance and the size of the smaller standard femoral prosthesis size, so that a thickness or thicknesses can be measured to be resected at the posterior surface of the medial and lateral condyles of the femur by adding the average thickness of the posterior condyles of the smaller standard femoral prosthesis and the second distance.

Abstract:

An apparatus and method of using same to form planar resections on the medial and lateral condyles of a femur and a corresponding resection of a tibia in a knee includes a caliper feeler and measurement plate to measure for the size of the femoral prosthesis to be received and a tibial resection guide. The caliper feeler and measurement plate are used to determine a first distance between an anterior surface of the femoral cortex and a plane tangent to a posterior surface of the medial and lateral condyles of a femur. A graduated scale between the caliper feeler and the measurement plate compares the first distance to at least two standard femoral prosthesis sizes so that the most suitable size can be selected, and measures a second distance between the first distance and the size of the selected standard femoral prosthesis size to determine a thickness or thickness to be resected at the posterior surface of the femoral condyles. The tibial resection guide includes a pair of styli which slide and rotate in the resection guide to contact the proximal tibial surface. The styli include incremental markings to properly place the guide for resection.

Abstract:

A tool mountable on an intramedullary rod projecting from the distal end of a femur, the tool carrying anterior and posterior caliper feelers for respectively engaging the anterior surface of the femoral cortex and the posterior surfaces of the condyles of the femur. The tool is adapted to be rotated with the rod to a determined angular position. The caliper feelers are supported on the tool to measure the perpendicular distance between the anterior surface of the femoral cortex and a plane inclined about an axis located in another plane tangent to the posterior surfaces of the medial and lateral condyles and at an angle correlated to the angle of rotation of the tool. A scale on the tool indicates prosthesis size on the basis of the distance measured. A distal cutting guide is mountable on the tool while still on the rod and the cutting guide has a guide slot for a cutting tool to form a planar cut at a distal end of the femur to resect a thickness of the femur based on the distance measured by the caliper feelers. Thereafter, a conventional A-P cutting guide is mounted on the rod or a pair of reference pins to enable anterior and posterior cuts to be made.
