Abstract:

Automatic tracking of an endless belt, such as a coated abrasive belt, is provided by fitting the belt with at least one permanent magnet, preferably of a flexible, rubber bonded sheet-like variety such as is conveniently adhered to the backside of the belt. One or more magnetic sensors positioned transversely to a longitudinal line defined by the path of the magnets as the belt is driven between rollers detect the magnets in the event the belt exceeds an allowed extent of transverse movement, in which event a control signal is generated which activates a steering mechanism causing the belt to move in the opposite transverse direction.

Abstract:

A surgically implantable prosthetic joint replacement device formed preferably of ceramic and having mating concave and convex condylar surfaces and intersecting lands for stopping motion at extended and pairs of contracted positions of the joint. The device consists of male and female portions for implantation in medullary canals of metacarpals and/or phalanges and having grooves along the dorsal surfaces for reception of extensor tendons. Engagement of the parts permits rotation and hyperextension.

Abrasive particles comprising a core of alumina-based mineral coated by cathodic arc deposition to provide a first layer of a first refractory material, the first layer being substantially uniform, and a second refractory material covering at least a portion of the first refractory material. The core can be fused alumina or an alumina-based ceramic. Improved abrasive products having at least a portion of their conventional abrasive particles replaced with the coated abrasive particles are also provided.
