Abstract:

A roll pack (10) is formed from a sheet of material having first and second edges. A first storage pocket (12) is positioned along the first edge of the sheet of material. An enclosure (20) is positioned along a second edge of the sheet. A strap (26) is attached to the second edge of the sheet near the enclosure (20). The strap (26) may be confined by the enclosure (20). When extended the strap (26) is used to secure the sheet of material when rolled up.

Abstract:

A modulated light beam is projected from a transmitter aircraft toward a receiver aircraft and reflected back toward the receiver aircraft by a retroreflector mounted on the receiver aircraft. The reflected light beam is received by the transmitter aircraft and is focused onto the face of an image dissector tube. The location of the reflected light beam on the face of the tube defines the position of the receiver aircraft in azimuth and elevation with respect to the position of the transmitter aircraft. The range difference between the two aircraft is determined by phase comparing the transmitted light beam with the received light beam. When used for in-flight refueling, further retroreflectors are mounted on a refueling boom and a similar technique is used to determine the exact location of the boom and its associated refueling nozzle. The resultant information is processed by a digital computer and used to either automatically orient the two aircraft, and the boom and nozzle, or create a display(s) suitable for use by one or both aircraft pilots, and the boom operator, to orient the two aircraft, and the boom and nozzle.

Abstract:

Thin film epitaxial layers of mixed oxide compounds, or of solid solutions of two mixed oxides, are deposited on a suitable single crystal substrate. Growth is achieved by introducing the substrate into a crucible containing a saturated solution of the oxide(s) in a molten alkali metal halide having additional undissolved oxide(s) present in the crucible. Evaporation of the alkali metal halide solvent produces and/or maintains the supersaturated condition, which is relieved by epitaxial deposition of the oxide(s) onto the substrate. When two mixed oxides are dissolved in the solvent, the composition of the film is determined and fixed by the temperature of growth. To produce a thin film of a constant composition, growth is conducted isothermally. To produce a thin film with a graded composition throughout its thickness, growth is conducted by slowly cooling the temperature of the solution. Excess, undissolved oxide is kept in a region of the crucible such that the undissolved oxide is several degrees hotter than the liquid in contact with the substrate.

Abstract:

A microwave interrogation-transponder system for controlling the airborne rendezvous and closure of two aircraft for aerial refueling and the like. The system of the invention includes a microwave interrogator mounted on the aft underfuselage of a tanker aircraft, for example, for interrogating and receiving a reply from a small microwave transponder mounted on the receiver aircraft near the aerial refueling receptacle. The angle of the received signal relative to the tanker is obtained from the angle sensing receiver portion of the microwave interrogator; whereas range is obtained from the phase of the returned modulation tone (i. e. , a range tone) relative to that which was transmitted by the interrogator. The transponder sends back to the interrogator a signal which is shifted in frequency with respect to the transmitted signal and operates in an active mode with gain at long ranges and in a passive mode with no gain at shorter ranges to achieve extremely accurate guidance characteristics.
