Abstract:

A bale tying mechanism is driven through a clutch that is controlled by a trip mechanism that actuates the clutch when the bale reaches a certain size. The trip mechanism includes a trip arm that swings between a stop position, that is established by an adjustable stop on the trip arm, and an upward, trip position, wherein it causes engagement of the clutch and the actuation of the tying mechanism. The arm drops from its trip position to its stop position after engagement of the clutch and is swung upwardly from the stop position to the trip position for engagement by a wheel that is rotated in response to increasing length of a bale, the wheel disengaging the arm initially after the trip arm causes the actuation of the clutch to permit the arm to drop against the stop. A latching device is provided between the wheel and the stop to prevent the arm from bouncing off the stop until it is engaged by the wheel.

Abstract:

A baler for making rectangular bales includes a main drive transmission section embodying a planetary gear set including a planet carrier which serves as an output member for delivering power to a plunger crank and to a knotter and feeder drive shaft. Power is delivered to the sun gear of the planetary gear set through a path including an input shaft adapted for connection to a towing tractor PTO shaft, a wet slip clutch, a simple input bevel gear set, a flywheel and an intermediate shaft having a plate fixed to one end thereof and secured to the flywheel by a shear bolt and having the sun gear integral with a second end thereof.

Abstract:

A pull-type harvesting machine in the form of a baler has a vertically adjustable windrow pickup mechanism and a generally fore-and-aft laterally swingable tongue that connects the baler to a towing tractor, lateral adjustment of the tongue causing the baler to shift between a transport position behind the tractor and an operating position wherein the pickup mechanism is disposed outwardly of the tractor. The positions of the tongue and the header are respectively controlled by a pair of two-way hydraulic cylinders, and the flow of pressurized fluid between the cylinders and the tractor hydraulic system is controlled by a single control valve on the tractor, the cylinders being connected in parallel. A pair of solenoid-actuated valves are disposed in the hydraulic lines on the opposite sides of the cylinder that controls the tongue, the solenoid valves being powered by the tractor electrical system and controlled by a switch on the tractor so that the operator can selectively lock out the tongue control cylinder, whereby the pickup mechanism and the tongue can simultaneously be adjusted from their transport to their operating condition or the pickup mechanism can be vertically adjusted independent of the tongue.

Abstract:

A latch assembly for a cylindrical baler for latching a bale discharge gate to the front section of the baler. The bale discharge gate is moveable by a hydraulic cylinder back and forth between a closed position for bale formation and open position for bale discharge. The latch assembly includes a latch member fixed to the front section of the baler; a latch hook, for engaging the latch member, pivotably mounted to the gate; and an actuator arm connected between the latch hook and the hydraulic cylinder for engaging and disengaging the latch hook with the latch member responsive to the retraction and extension of the cylinder. The improvement comprises a resiliently biased slidable connection between the latch hook for permitting the actuator arm to be moved responsive to the retraction of the cylinder plunger even though the latch hook may be restrained from movement due to misalignment of the latch hook with the latch member.
