LL Bean Reports Flat Sales in Tough Year for Retailers
The past year was a time of big change at Bean. Smith, who was hired in November, is the first person from outside the company to be hired as CEO. The year also marked the passing of Leon Leonwood Bean's grandson, former president, CEO and chairman emeritus Leon Gorman.
"It was certainly a daunting experience to fill those shoes," McCormick told The Associated Press, referring to Leon Gorman. "I think the family is going to have to decide who the next CEO is. Is it a family member or a non-family member?"
McCormick has been with L.L. Bean for 31 years, including 13 as president and CEO. He succeeded Leon Gorman, founder L.L. Beans grandson. The current chairman is Beans great-grandson, Shawn Gorman.
"The important part of L.L. was his personality. He was a hardy, enthusiastic, outgoing guy. He shouted most of his conversations because he was hard of hearing and assumed everyone else was, too. He was a genuine presence," said his grandson, Leon Gorman, chairman of the board.
