Abstract:A position sensing head combines a sensing element and a simplified electronic module to enable operation with one wire, in addition to a circuit common, for providing power and transmitting a signal, while separating the sensing head from signal conditioning circuits by over 10 meters. The simplicity of the electronic module allows the use of basic electronic components that operate at more than 225 C. The signal is a variable frequency impressed onto the one wire, which can be read by a frequency meter. Another signal, such as a position or temperature, can be impressed onto the one wire at the same time as the first signal. The second signal is of a different frequency range so that it will not interfere with the first. A demodulator circuit can separate the two signals. The sensing element construction allows for locating up to three active elements measuring the same target.

Abstract:A method and apparatus for nuclear logging, and in particular, neutron porosity logging is presented. In accordance with the present invention, a pair of spaced lithium detectors, preferably Li. sup. 6 I crystal or Li. sup. 6 doped glass are used to detect neutrons emitted from a borehole formation being logged. In addition, novel data processing is used to strip the gamma-ray peak from the spectrum developed by the lithium detectors.

Abstract:In accordance with an illustrative embodiment of the present invention, a method and apparatus is disclosed for logging earth formations traversed by a borehole in which an earth formation is irradiated with neutrons and gamma radiation produced thereby in the formation and in the borehole is detected. A sleeve or shield for capturing neutrons from the borehole and producing gamma radiation characteristic of that capture is provided to give an indication of the contribution of borehole capture events to the total detected gamma radiation. It is then possible to correct from those borehole effects the total detected gamma radiation and any earth formation parameters determined therefrom.

Abstract:A sensing apparatus for use in harsh environments to measure a target characteristic. The apparatus has a sensing element formed as a section of a coupled slow-wave structure including at least two impedance conductors each curled into a helix with opposing directions of winding around a dielectric base to form a resonator. The sensing element provides as an output signal a digital frequency that depends on the value of the measured characteristic. A target tube moves over the sensing element, covering and uncovering portions of the sensing element. An electronics module receives the output signal and displays the measured characteristic. A separate coaxial cable is connected to each impedance conductor on one end and to the electronics module on the other end, with the length of the coaxial cables separating the electronics module from the sensing element by a distance sufficient to avoid exposing the electronics module to the harsh environments.
