Abstract:

Method and system for efficiently and quickly forming a sequence of convolution values from an over-sampled digital signal sequence. Convolution value differences are computable from a set of digital signal values that is smaller than the original set of signal values by a factor of R, the over-sampling rate. The number of adders and the associated time delay for computation of the convolution differences are reduced by at least a factor R and by at least a factor approximately proportional to log (R), respectively, as compared to conventional computation of a convolution value. This approach is used to estimate a time value for which the convolution attains a largest magnitude or value.

Abstract:

Method and system for carrier recovery and estimation of Doppler shift from a signal source that is moving relative to a signal receiver. A pure carrier preamble for the received signal is processed through each of two stages of a linear predictor to obtain a successively more accurate estimation of a Doppler frequency offset for the carrier. The received signal is downconverted by each stage estimation of the Doppler frequency offset, and the downconverted signal is processed through a decision feedback phase locked loop to provide a signal in which substantially all of the Doppler offset and/or phase angle are identified and removed. The system has low complexity, is fast, and is accurate to within an estimated few tens of Hertz and will work with signals having relatively low signal-to-noise ratios. The invention is useful for receipt of signals from satellites in low earth orbits (LEOs) and other non-geosynchronous orbits, and wherever a transmitter and receiver are moving relative to each other.

Abstract:

A disk drive includes a spindle motor assembly mounted on an enclosure and at least two disks. The disks are mounted on a hub of the spindle motor assembly. Each of the disks have a magnetic medium deposited between an inner circumference and an outer circumference. The disks define a volume therebetween wherein airflow is generated when the disks rotate. The disk drive also includes an airflow spoiler positioned between the disks. The airflow spoiler has a spoiler mounting portion and a non-data bearing extending portion. The spoiler mounting portion is configured to be mounted on the hub of the spindle motor assembly. The non-data bearing extending portion is connected to the spoiler mounting portion and extends outwardly therefrom into the volume defined between the disks. The non-data bearing extending portion extends at least partially over the magnetic medium.

Abstract:

Method and system for adaptively estimating and compensating for phase noise error in a received signal s(t;data). A plurality of transmission parameter symbol (TPS) sets, each with a representative TPS group frequency, are incorporated in the signal before transmission. Received channel response amplitudes are analyzed to select a particular TPS frequency group, and inverse Fourier transforms, N(t) and D(t), are computed for these chosen signals. Abstract:

A method of estimating timing of at least one of the beginning and the end of a transmitted signal segment in the presence of time delay in a signal transmission channel. Each of a sequence of signal frames is provided with a pseudo-noise (PN) m-sequences, where the PN sequences satisfy selected orthogonality and closures relations. A convolution signal is formed between a received signal and the sequence of PN segments and is subtracted from the received signal to identify the beginning and/or end of a PN segment within the received signal. PN sequences are used for timing recovery, for carrier frequency recovery, for estimation of transmission channel characteristics, for synchronization of received signal frames, and as a replacement for guard intervals in an OFDM context.

Abstract:

Method and system for determining whether one or more multipath signals is present in a received signal frame that includes a reference symbol (RS) sequence RS(t;m) as part of the frame, and for iteratively evaluating a multipath signal that is present. The RS sequence index (m) for the frame is identified, and first and second Fourier transforms Φ(f;m;ref) and Φ(f;rec) for the received frame are provided for a selected time segment IS that includes the RS sequence of the received frame. An inverse Fourier transform σ(t;m) of the ratio of the transforms is computed and analyzed. If at least one multipath signal is present, σ(t;m) is nonlinearly filtered, and the filtered function is convolved with RS(t;m). This convolution represents a received signal extension, due to multipath signal(s) presence. A refinement procedure analyzes a contribution to multipath signals from the preceding frame(s).

A disk drive including a disk drive base, a disk coupled to the disk drive base, and a head stack assembly coupled to the disk drive base. The disk drive further includes an airflow diverter filter component disposed upstream of the head stack assembly with respect to disk rotation induced airflow for modifying the disk rotation induced airflow adjacent the head stack assembly. A disk drive includes a disk drive base, a disk, and a head stack assembly rotatably coupled to the base adjacent the disk surface of the disk. The disk drive includes an airflow channeling enclosure. The enclosure includes an airflow inlet disposed downstream of the head stack assembly and configured to receive the disk rotation induced airflow therethrough. The enclosure further includes an airflow channel extending along the disk surface from the airflow inlet. The enclosure further includes an outer wall extending along the disk surface from the airflow inlet and defining the airflow channel radially interior to the outer wall. The enclosure further includes an airflow outlet disposed upstream of the head stack assembly extending from the outer wall and the channel opposite the airflow inlet for modifying the disk rotation induced airflow passing from the channel.
