Abstract:
Systems, devices, and techniques are disclosed relating to dispersion devices that include a slot waveguide coupled with another waveguide such as a strip waveguide. For example, one or more structural parameters can be obtained for a dispersion device, including a slot waveguide coupled to a strip waveguide, to cause the dispersion device to produce dispersion, having a dispersion profile, for an electromagnetic wave propagated through the dispersion device, the one or more structural parameters including one or more of a slot thickness for a slot of the slot waveguide or a spacing thickness between the slot waveguide and the other waveguide; and making the dispersion device, including the slot waveguide and the other waveguide, according to the structural parameters.
Methods And Apparatus For Imaging With Conformable Ultrasound Patch
An ultrasound patch may conform to a curved surface of a large, curvilinear part of a human body, and may capture ultrasound images of underlying tissue for detection of disease. The patch may comprise a flexible, elastomeric substrate, in which phased arrays of piezoelectric ultrasound transducers are embedded. The phased arrays may steer ultrasound beams through a wide angle to image a large volume of tissue. Mechanical deformation of the flexible substrate as it conforms to a curvilinear body part may change the relative 3D positions of the phase arrays. However, localization may be performed to detect these 3D positions. Data captured by the phased arrays may be processed, to create an ultrasound image of the underlying tissue. A semi-flexible, intermediate layer may partially encapsulate each phased array, to distribute stress at an interface between the rigid phased array and more flexible substrate.

Abstract:
In the operation of analytical devices, and particularly laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) devices, a number of advantages may be obtained by the use of complementary safety mechanisms, such as those that govern the operation or firing of a laser. Such complementary safety mechanisms, compared to the individual safety mechanisms acting alone, prevent operation of the laser under a greater number of unsafe circumstances (even if one or more detected conditions are safe, based on not activating the associated safety mechanism) and permits operation under a greater number of safe circumstances (even if one or more detected conditions are unsafe, based on activating the associated safety mechanism).
