An improved apparatus for determining the time rate of attrition of a mass of solid particles comprising a chamber; inlet and outlet providing for entrance and exit, respectively, to the chamber; a conduit providing communication between the inlet and outlet; an impeller located in the chamber to urge solid particles from the inlet in the general direction of the sidewall of the chamber; and a motor to provide rotation of the impeller. Improved simulation of solid particle attrition in commercial cyclone separators is obtained.
An improved method for restoring catalytic activity of solid particles used to promote hydrocarbon conversion when the particles are contacted with oxygen-containing vapors to form a mixture therewith and then partially separated therefrom by means of an apparatus having one or more improvements, all of which lessen the amount particle attrition that otherwise occurs from the use of prior art devices for separating particles from a mixture of such particles and vapors. These improvements include: an arresting means to slow the velocity of at least a portion of those particles which preferentially are induced to move toward a cylindrical surface; a flow reversal means to substantially change the direction of flow of a mixture of vapors and particles at an inlet means; and a plate means located between a particle inlet and particle outlet means for collecting at least a portion of those particles which had been separated from a mixture of vapors and particles prior to arriving at the location of the plate means.
A dry bulk cement storage and mixing system comprises one or more generally cylindrical storage tanks or bins having somewhat wedge shaped bottom discharge sections with tapered flight conveyor screws extending across the diameter of the bin at the convergence of opposed sloping sidewalls of the bottom section. The conveyor screw is connected to a pneumatic fluidizing plenum wherein compressed air is introduced into the plenum for conveying material to a mixer or recirculating the material back into a selected storage tank through a distributor device mounted on top of the tank which distributes the material to minimize segregation of smaller or less dense particles during discharge of the material into the storage tank. One embodiment of the storage tank is mounted for rotation about a generally horizontal axis and includes a transversely extending cement unloading and vent conduit extending within the tank chamber. Cement stored within a tank may be sampled by a device which includes an elongated tube extending through a sealable fitting for withdrawing samples of material for analysis of the material mixture within the tank.
Disclosed is a method and apparatus for measuring and/or continuously recording small pressure differences by means of a novel manometer-like device. Accuracies of plus or minus about 0. 05 dynes/square centimeter are achieved by means of a disclosed device which can measure, record, and self-calibrate.

Abstract:
A method for determining the specific gravity of a liquid includes introducing a purge stream of a reference liquid into a column and introducing a first vapor purge stream into a first sensor located below the level of the reference liquid. Then a second vapor purge stream is introduced into a second sensor located below the level of the reference liquid sensor and a measurement of the difference in pressure between the two sensors is indicative of the specific gravity of the liquid.
Apparatus for pressure testing fluid transmission pipelines comprising spaced apart annular inflatable seal members supported by support members which are interconnected by an elongated flexible tube to define an annular space which may be pressurized to pressure test a section of pipe between the seal members. The tubular member defines a flow passage for pipeline fluid during operation of the apparatus. A fluid motor is disposed in the passage and drivably connected to a hydraulic pump which receives fluid from the pipeline to pressurize the seal members and the annular space. The pump may be remotely controlled by radio control receiver-transmitter apparatus to operate the pressure testing apparatus and to monitor pressures in the seal members and the test space. The pump and control members may be disposed in a housing which is mounted adjacent one end of the apparatus. The apparatus is propelled through a pipeline by pressure fluid in the line.
Rotating Catalyst Bed With Pressurized Gas Seal For Methane Conversion System
Hydrocarbon gas, such as methane, is partially oxidized by flowing the gas through a moving catalyst bed supported on a rotating drum disposed in a partitioned duct. Catalyst is regenerated by exposure to an oxygen containing gas flowing through a passage formed in the duct. A gas seal is formed between the duct partition and a surface of the catalyst support drum on the downstream side of the drum to minimize the leakage flow of hydrocarbon gas into the regenerator gas. The pressures of the hydrocarbon gas and regenerator gas are regulated upstream of the catalyst bed to minimize leakage flow of one gas into the flow space of the other gas through a space formed between the duct partition and the drum upstream of the catalyst bed.
Apparatus for separating solid particles from vapor which in one embodiment employs at least one zone defined by at least two generally vertical and at least two generally horizontal vanes and in another embodiment optionally employs at least one vane to inhibit turbulence in a lower portion of this apparatus to aid the settling of particles within a particle outlet means. This apparatus is particularly suited to at least partially separating solid particles from a mixture of vapors and solid particles which arise either when restoring the catalytic activity of solid particles that had previously been used to promote a chemical conversion or when carrying out a chemical conversion, such as for example hydrocarbon cracking or reforming. Improved methods employing such apparatus are also disclosed.
