Abstract:
Apparatus and method for controlling picture quality in a transfuse xerographic machine has independent velocity control of image transfer and transfuse belts or rollers when they are disengaged from each other and a common velocity control when they are engaged with each other. The machine can be a monochrome or color copier or printer. Various rollers can be the drive and/or the encoder rollers.

US Classification:

Abstract:
An apparatus and method are provided for the use of an optical sensor to determine the position of a printing device relative to a piece of paper or a paper-handling surface. The optical sensor reads marks to detect movement and/or direction of movement or spacing of imprints on the paper. Benefits include swath stitching calibration, color to color registration, producing printing device alignment data and generating information for printing device firing signals. The present invention is applicable to a wide field of printing technologies, including, but not limited to, acoustic ink printing, thermal ink jet printing, piezo ink jet printing, ionographic printing and a variety of other printing technologies involving the need for positioning a printing device relative to a piece of paper.
Color Image Registration Based Upon Belt And Raster Output Scanner Synchronization

Abstract:
Color electrophotographic printers having latent image positions synchronized with start-of-scan signals. A laser source projects a laser beam onto a multifaceted rotating polygon that sweeps that beam in a scan line across a moving photoreceptor. A start-of-scan detector produces start-of-scan signals when the laser beam is in position to write a scan line. A belt sensor produces belt signals when indicia on the photoreceptor passes a reference position. A controller receives the belt signals and the start-of-scan and then adjusts the photoreceptors rotational velocity such that the belt signals are an integral multiple of the start-of-scan signals. To reduce the impact of drive roller eccentricities on belt signal to start-of-scan signal timing, the perimeters of photoreceptor roller elements are sub-multiples of the photoreceptor length.

Abstract:
A sheet registration system, especially for printers, with a lower cost and lower mass-movement system for both sheet deskewing and transverse registration repositioning of the sheets in the same integral system, especially for higher speed printing. Only one main drive motor can drive both of the two spaced apart sheet feeding nips, together with a much lower power, and lower cost, deskewing differential drive system for providing the relative differential angular movement of the two spaced sheet feeding nips to achieve the desired amount of sheet deskewing movement, without interrupting the forward feeding movement of the sheet. Also disclosed are extensive further reductions in the component mass of the lateral translation movement for lateral sheet registration.

Abstract:
A sheet registration system, especially for printers, with a lower cost and lower mass system for sheets deskewing, and optionally also compatibly providing transverse registration repositioning of the sheets. Mechanisms are disclosed which need only one main drive motor to drive both of the two spaced apart sheet feeding nips, together with a much lower power, and lower cost, deskewing differential drive system for providing the relative differential angular movement of the two spaced sheet feeding nips to achieve the desired amount of sheet deskewing movement, without interrupting the forward feeding movement of the sheet.

Abstract:
In a printing system in which a rotatable print image bearing belt is mounted on at least one axial belt roller, and the belt must be maintained in a desired substantially consistent lateral registration to maintain image quality, the lateral misregistration of the belt is sensed and a low and substantially constant lateral positional corrective force is applied to the belt in response to the sensing of the lateral misregistration in one of the two directions axial of the axial belt roller for at least one complete rotation of the rotatable print image bearing belt, the low and substantially constant transverse corrective force having a force level sufficient to provide the desired substantially consistent lateral registration of the print image bearing belt.
Apparatus And Method For The Prevention Of Trailing Edge Deletion In Image Forming Systems

Abstract:
The present invention provides a capability to form an image along a trailing edge of the paper by the use of a trailing edge deletion prevention apparatus capable of manipulating the paper to allow components capable of forming the image to travel in proximity to the paper without obstruction. In various embodiments, the invention involves the use of a biasing member or an interdigitated support element, each providing a trailing edge deletion prevention capability.
