Abstract:
A method, system and apparatus for forming a three-dimensional object on a layer-by-layer basis involves forming a portion of the three-dimensional object using selective deposition modeling (SDM). SDM involves using at least one orifice, such as a jet, which dispenses a droplet of a flowable material that solidifies upon being dispensed. A drop volume capability of each orifice is adjusted until substantially all orifices have a uniform drop volume capability and all dispensed droplets of the flowable material have a uniform volume.
A component to control the viscosity of phase change material formulations is made by reacting selected nucleophiles, including fatty acid/alcohol reactants with an isocyanate, is disclosed. The addition of the isocyanate and the different nucleophiles will create a viscosity modifying component of low viscosity that can be formulated with higher molecular weight polyamide resins to achieve increased toughness in phase change solid imaging materials and carrier compositions used to make phase change ink jet inks.
Compositions And Methods For Selective Deposition Modeling
Phase change compositions that are solid at ambient temperature and liquid at an elevated temperature above ambient temperature are disclosed for advantageous use in selective deposition modeling methods for building three-dimensional objects. A phase change composition according to the disclosed invention is a semi-crystalline component mixture having a freezing point of at least about 68Â C. , a melting point of at least about 88Â C. and a viscosity of about 13 centipoise at 135Â C. The composition includes a plurality of waxes having a broad melting point range and molecular weight range. Three-dimensional objects having minimal curl, delamination and stress cracks can be produced at a faster rate than heretofore known by using selective deposition modeling techniques employing the disclosed compositions.

Abstract:
A solubilizing agent and a compound made by reacting selected nucleophiles, including fatty acid reactants and amines with an isocyanate are disclosed. The addition of the isocyanate and the different nucleophiles will create a di-urethane tetra-amide solubilizing agent product. The polyamide-solubilizing agent is useful as an ingredient in a phase change solid imaging material and as carrier compositions used to make phase change ink jet inks.

Abstract:
An ink and method of its use for printing on a variety of substrates in a first aspect involves a water-insoluble colorant, water, and a primary solvent such as diacetone alcohol capable of dissolving both the water-insoluble colorant and the water. In a further aspect, the ink composition includes a secondary solvent capable of modifying the properties of the ink, the secondary solvent being selected from the group consisting of alcohols, amines, esters, glycol ethers, ketones, polyols, and keto-pyrroles. In a still further aspect, the ink may have at least two polyols, including a first polyol characterized by being semi-solid at operating temperature and a second polyol characterized by being liquid at operating temperature. In a further aspect, the ink composition includes a surfactant selected from the group consisting of hydrocarbon-based surfactants, silicone-based surfactants, and fluorosurfactants.

A fast-drying ink composition comprising water, a fast-drying solvent mixture including a hydrophilic co-solvent having low enthalpy of evaporation, a surface-active humectant, and a colorant. The hydrophilic co-solvent may be selected from the group consisting of propylene glycol n-propyl ether, tripropylene glycol methyl ether, and dipropylene glycol methyl ether. The surface-active humectant may comprise a hydrophobic end having a repeating unit “n” ranging from 1 to 36 and selected from the group consisting of alkane-based (CH)n, fluoro-based (CF)n, and silicone-based (SiO)n, and a hygroscopic end having a repeating unit “i” ranging from 2 to 8 and selected from the group consisting of a hydroxyl group, an amine group, a carboxyl group and an ester group.
A selective adhesive mechanism comprises an engineered surface structure or substrate and a compliant member. The compliant member is able to be a dry and non-tacky substance. The compliant member is selectively adhesive to the engineered surface when the compliant member is in contact with the engineered surface. The compliant member shows adhesion to the engineered surface when the compliant member is within a pre-selected range of hardness. In some embodiments, the compliant member comprises a polymeric member, a thermoplastic elastomer, silicone, polyurethane, or a combination thereof.
