  • Dynamic Object-Based Assessment And Training Of Expert Visual Search And Scanning Skills For Operating Motor Vehicles

    view source
  • US Patent:
    8597027, Dec 3, 2013
  • Filed:
    Nov 25, 2009
  • Appl. No.:
    12/592487
  • Inventors:
Loren J. Staplin - Allentown PA, US
  • International Classification:
    G09B 9/04
  • US Classification:
    434 65, 434 69
  • Abstract:
The present invention is a method and system to permit assessment and measurement of a combination of visual and cognitive processes necessary for safe driving-object detection, by recognition of particular objects as actual or potential safety hazards or traffic hazards, through the continuous switching of visual attention between and among objects while virtually driving, according to an object's instantaneous priority as a safety threats or traffic hazard, that together are termed expert search and scanning skills. The present invention will reference the driver's performance against that of acknowledged experts in this skill; and then provide precise feedback about the type, location, and timing of search and scanning performance errors, plus remedial strategies to correct such errors.
  • Staged-Learning Process And System For Situational Awareness Training Using Integrated Media

    view source
  • US Patent:
    20020146667, Oct 10, 2002
  • Filed:
    Feb 14, 2002
  • Appl. No.:
    10/076911
  • Inventors:
James Dowdell - Coraopolis PA, US
Loren Staplin - Allentown PA, US
  • Assignee:
    SAFE DRIVE TECHNOLOGIES, LLC
  • International Classification:
    G09B009/04
    G09B019/16
  • US Classification:
    434/062000
  • Abstract:
A method and system is disclosed for a staged learning process for situational awareness training using integrated media wherein a mix of classroom lectures, computer-based training and immersive simulation is used to advance the student from an operational stage to a tactical stage to a strategic stage. During the simulation exercises, the student is presented with a realistic interactive driving environment and external stimuli. The simulator measures and records the student's performance, generating a score based on various factors. The student is then able to review his or her performance or parts thereof from multiple perspectives. The process teaches, tests and reinforces situational awareness in drivers through an orderly, consistent “preview, drive, review” procedure and gives the student a level of situational awareness generally achieved by a driver with greater experience.
  • System For Testing And Evaluating Driver Situational Awareness

    view source
  • US Patent:
    58880747, Mar 30, 1999
  • Filed:
    Sep 16, 1996
  • Appl. No.:
    8/714779
  • Inventors:
    Loren Staplin - Allentown PA
Kenneth W. Gish - Bensalem PA
Albert H. Kirchner - Great Falls VA
  • Assignee:
    Scientex Corporation - Arlington VA
  • International Classification:
    G09B 500
  • US Classification:
    434258
  • Abstract:
A system for testing and evaluating driver situational awareness incorporates a device for displaying road and traffic images to a subject being tested, road and traffic image data for simulating operation of a vehicle to be outputted on the display device, instruction data to be outputted at least on the display device, input devices for inputting response data from the test subject in response to road and traffic image data generated on the display means, and a control device for controlling the operation of the system. The control device incorporates a vision test component for conducting a vision test of the subject and a driving reaction test component for conducting a driving reaction test of the subject. Each of the vision and driving reaction tests includes generating road and traffic image data for simulating operation of a vehicle, generating instruction data in coordination with the image data for providing instructions for the subject, monitoring for inputting of response data, and determining whether the inputted response data is correct or incorrect. The generated image data includes road and traffic video image data, test pattern image data and situation test image data.
  • Automated Data Acquisition And Processing Of Traffic Information In Real-Time System And Method For Same

    view source
  • US Patent:
    60643188, May 16, 2000
  • Filed:
    Jun 11, 1997
  • Appl. No.:
    8/873239
  • Inventors:
Albert H. Kirchner - Great Falls VA
    Loren Staplin - Allentown PA
Kenneth W. Gish - Bensalem PA
  • Assignee:
The Scientex Corporation - Arlington VA
  • International Classification:
    G08G 109
  • US Classification:
    340905
  • Abstract:
The present invention is directed to a portable system for automatic data acquisition and processing of traffic information in real-time. The system incorporates a plurality of sensors operatively positioned upstream of a work zone or roadway incident with each of the sensors being adapted to detect current traffic conditions, at least one variable message device positioned upstream of the work zone or roadway incident, a plurality of remote station controllers, each operatively connected to the plurality of sensors and the variable message device, and a central system controller located within remote communication range of the remote station controllers, wherein the central system controller and the plurality of remote station controllers are capable of remotely communicating with one another. Each of the sensors is adapted to output traffic condition data to its corresponding remote station controller. The corresponding remote station controllers then transmit the traffic condition data to the central system controller.
