Abstract:

Apparatus for altering translational velocity of molecules in a gas. A source of gas is in fluid communication with a supersonic nozzle. The nozzle is disposed on an arm at a selected distance from an axis for rotation about the axis. The nozzle has an exit portion substantially perpendicular to the arm. Motive apparatus rotates the arm so that the translational velocity of molecules with respect to a laboratory frame of reference is altered. In a preferred embodiment, gas flows from the source through the axis and the arm to exit from the nozzle.

Abstract:

The invention teaches how to reduce the traffic associated with handling cache lines containing useless data (i. e. cache lines corresponding to pages that have been invalidated). The invention makes it possible to evict such cache lines earlier, to avoid write backs of useless data from such cache lines to main memory, and to avoid transmitting useless data from such cache lines to the requesting remote coherence controller in a multiprocessor system. The present invention describes a mechanism for invalidating cache lines containing useless data transparently and without programmers involvement. For efficiency, the content of a cache line containing useless data is invalidated only when the line is referenced or is about to be allocated for some new data.

Abstract:

A method and an apparatus that improves virtual memory management. The proposed method and apparatus provides an application with an efficient channel for communicating information about future behavior of an application with respect to the use of memory and other resources to the OS, a paging daemon, and other system software. The state of hint bits, which are integrated into page table entries and TLB entries and are used for communicating information to the OS, can be changed explicitly with a special instruction or implicitly as a result of referencing the associated page. The latter is useful for canceling hints. The method and apparatus enables memory allocators, garbage collectors, and compilers (such as those used by the Java platform) to use a page-aligned heap and a page-aligned stack to assist the OS in effective management of memory resources. This mechanism can also be used in other system software.

A computing apparatus and method classify data objects into at least a first type and alternatively a second type, and allocate a first portion of computer memory to objects of the first type and a second portion of computer memory to objects of the second type. A computer system and method for compiling a program, where the program executes pointer assignments from a source object to a destination object, each source object being addressable through a first pointer and each destination object being addressable through a second pointer. Abstract:

The disclosure describes an absorption spectroscopy method for sensing hydrogen gas in a sample atmosphere and an associated hydrogen sensor. A light beam, having a wavelength corresponding to a vibrational transition of hydrogen molecules from a ground vibration state to any excited rotational vibration state via a quadrupole interaction, is introduced into an optical cavity adapted to receive a sample atmosphere to be tested for the presence of hydrogen gas. The light is introduced into the cavity in an off-axis alignment to systematically eliminate cavity resonances, while preserving the absorption signal amplifying properties of such cavities. Hydrogen absorption is measured is terms of cavity output, as in the ICOS technique.

A method of and system for intercepting a transaction instantiated by a database application to determine if an electronic signature is necessary to commit the transaction to the database is disclosed. Abstract:

An RFID system includes a pair of guide tracks located on opposite boundaries of at least one zone. A channel is movably attached to the guide tracks and is configured to move along the guide tracks through the at least one zone. A mobile RFID reader is movably attached to the channel and the mobile RFID reader is paused at a plurality of read points to scan for RFID tags located. The read points are determined by an arrangement of a plurality of hexagonal areas which are grouped together to create a combined area, where the combined area is aligned with the predefined area to define locations of the plurality of hexagonal areas, and where substantially central locations of each hexagonal area represent the plurality of read points.
