Abstract:

A catheter used for treatment of complex vasculature, such as a bifurcated aneurysm, is provided with an inflatable balloon at a distal portion thereof. The shape, location and material of the inflatable balloon are selected such that when inflated, the balloon conforms to the shape of the complex vasculature, or at least a portion thereof, without appreciably deforming the vessel walls. In this manner, the balloon can be used to control flow in the vasculature, for example occluding a selected branch of the vasculature during introduction of material in order concentrate the material and minimize its disbursement by blood flow.

A medical device retrieval system can include an elongate core member and an expandable member coupled to a distal portion of the elongate core member. The expandable member can move between collapsed and expanded states. The expandable member has an exterior having barbs positioned therealong. The expandable member can be expanded to contact and engage a portion of a medical device positioned within the vasculature of a patient in order to retrieve and remove the medical device therefrom. When the expandable member moves to the collapsed state, it can move the medical device from a higher profile configuration to a lower profile configuration to facilitate retrieval.

In some examples, a catheter may include a catheter body configured such that at least one of a proximal portion or a medial portion of the catheter body has a cross-sectional shape including at least three apexes, adjacent apexes being connected by curvilinear sidewalls, the cross-section being taken substantially orthogonal to a longitudinal axis of the catheter body. In some examples, the entire catheter body has the cross-sectional shape including at least three apexes, adjacent apexes being connected by curvilinear sidewalls. In other examples, only a portion of the catheter body has the cross-sectional shape.
