Abstract:

An optical fiber ring network includes a plurality of interconnected nodes, each pair of neighboring nodes being interconnected by a pair of optical links. Using coarse wavelength division multiplexing, data is transmitted in both directions over each link, using a first wavelength to transmit data in a first direction over the link and a second wavelength to transmit data in a second, opposite direction over the link. The two wavelengths and differ by at least 10 nm. Each of the data streams transmitted over the optical link has a bandwidth of at least 2. 5 Gbps. Further, each data stream has at least two logical streams embedded therein. A link multiplexer at each node of the network includes one or more link cards for coupling the link multiplexer to client devices, and one or more multiplexer units for coupling the link multiplexer to the optical links. Each link card includes frame buffers capable of storing numerous Fibre Channel frames that are being transmitted to and from the client device(s) coupled to that link card. The link card also includes flow control logic for pre-filling the frame buffers with frames of data before the receiving client devices send flow control messages to request their transmission.

Abstract:

The optical transceiver module includes an optical transmitter and an optical receiver. The optical transceiver module also includes an internal serial bus and a plurality of addressable components electrically coupled to the internal serial bus. Each of the addressable components included a serial interface for communicating with the internal serial bus, and a memory. Each addressable component also includes a unique address or chip select logic coupled to a controller via a chip select line. This allows data to be addressed to specific addressable components. The addressable components may include a laser driver, a laser bias controller, a power controller, a pre-amplifier, a post-amplifier, a laser wavelength controller, a main controller, a electrothermal cooler, an analog-to-digital converter, a digital-to analog converter, an APD bias controller, or any combination of the aforementioned components.

Abstract:

Presently preferred embodiments of the current invention are directed to a protocol analyzer for interpreting data frames captured on a communications network. The protocol analyzer includes a network interface connection for providing the electrical and physical connection to the communications network and for receiving data frames from the network in a particular physical layer protocol format. The protocol analyzer further includes analysis software for providing an interpretation of received data frames. The interpretation of a frame is based upon a series of definition constructs that are stored in a protocol definition file and a protocol database of the protocol analyzer. The definition constructs collectively define the characteristics of a data frame for a given physical layer protocol. Also, the constructs provide a means for identifying any one of a number of higher level protocols that may be embedded within the data frame. Also disclosed is a graphical user interface for use as a protocol editor for assembling the necessary definition constructs for inclusion in a protocol definition file.

Abstract:

An optoelectronic device that has a network address (e. g. , IP address) and participates in in-band traffic for purposes of performing functions (e. g. , network diagnostics, network control, network provisioning, fault isolation, etc. ) that are traditionally performed by host equipment. An embodiment of the invention may have a protocol engine and a status monitoring module. The protocol engine identifies data packets that are addressed to the optoelectronic device, and allows the optoelectronic device to insert packets of information generated by the device into in-band data. Logic of the optoelectronic device may modify the operating parameters of the device according to the control information included in the data packets. The status monitoring module detects the device's physical conditions and the conditions of its links. Status information generated by the status monitoring module may be incorporated into in-band data by the protocol engine such that the status information may be communicated to a host device or a remote device.
