Abstract:

The present invention is for shaping a packet time out threshold in a wireless telecommunications network including a TCP session. First, a TCP communications session ( ) is identified during which first and second communications nodes ( ) communicate with one another by transmitting and receiving data packets across first and second channels ( ) of a wireless network ( ). Next, a processor ( ) located either in one of the communications nodes ( ) or in a network base station subsystem ( ) determines delay characteristics of each of first and second channels ( ) of the communications session. Once the delay characteristics are determined, the processor ( ) causes a delay packet to be transmitted on a slower of the first and second channels ( ) at predetermined intervals to increase an average time delay associated with both the first and second channels ( ). Consequently, the number of unnecessary packet time outs on the first and second channels ( ) is minimized.

Abstract:

A method () and navigation system () are provided that generate a navigation route that is environmentally optimized between an origin and destination. Upon receiving an origination location and destination from a user or other source, such as a GPS satellite (), a route determination module () determines multiple routes between the origination location and destination. An environmental analysis module () then processes each route to determine an environmental impact value. An evaluation module () then can selects a proposed route for presentation to the user via a presentation module (). Alternatively, the evaluation module () may select two or more routes, which the presentation module () may present with corresponding environmental impact data such that the user may select a particular route. Additionally, a green coach module () may provide instructions to the user for more environmentally beneficial operation of a vehicle ().

Abstract:

A method and apparatus for operation of a node within a mobile ad hoc cognitive radio network is provided. The method includes sensing at least one assigned communications channel. Sensing at least one assigned communications channel includes measuring a value of at least one parameter corresponding to the communications channel. The method further includes comparing the measured value of the at least one parameter with a set of stored values of the at least one parameter to determine a change in the measured values. Finally a sleep mode of the node is activated for a time period, wherein the time period is determined using the change in the measured values.

Abstract:

Connecting to an unsecured wired or wireless network poses severe security and privacy risks. An individual application such as a mobile online banking application address this by using point to point private network connections. Browsers, however, generally do not use point to point private network connections and depend on the target website to establish a secure connection. Providing a secure connection that is the default for all network access and that encrypts all over the air or over the wire traffic mitigates these risks. However, virtual client networks (VPNs) client applications can be difficult to set up and need to be always on to ensure that all network activity is secure. By embedding a VPN capability and automating the connection process, a safe and secure network connection can be made available to users of computing devices. An embedded private connect VPN system may use Domain Name Server (DNS) functionality to determine which data or content streams are to be transmitted through a generated private connect VPN tunnel.
