Abstract:

An impedance network for passive shoot-through protection of active switches in clamp-mode topologies. In one exemplary embodiment a switch-mode converter, includes: a primary switch; an auxiliary switch coupled in series with a capacitor; and an impedance network, coupled to the primary switch and the auxiliary switch; configured to limit current during simultaneous conduction of the primary and auxiliary switches. The impedance network includes a resistor coupled in series to a diode and both in parallel with an inductor. The impedance network permits the design of a clamp-mode converter without the need for a delay between switch turn-off and turn-on of primary and auxiliary switches.

Abstract:

A system and method for reducing a DC magnetic flux bias in a transformer and a power converter employing the system or the method. The power converter has a full bridge switching circuit coupled across a primary winding of a transformer and a hybridge rectifier circuit coupled across a secondary winding of the transformer. The transformer is subject to the DC magnetic flux bias as a result of an imbalance in the hybridge rectifier circuit. In one embodiment, the system includes: (1) a sensor configured to develop a signal representing the DC magnetic flux bias in the transformer; and (2) a controller, coupled to the sensor, configured to operate the full bridge switching circuit as a function of the signal thereby to reduce the DC magnetic flux bias.

Abstract:

A local loop control system and method of operating the same for use with a power converter. The power converter includes a first output coupled to a first synchronous rectifier circuit and a second output coupled to a second synchronous rectifier circuit. The power converter employs a main controller configured to regulate a voltage proportional to a weighted sum of the first and go second outputs. In one embodiment, the local loop control system includes: (1) a first output controller configured to regulate a voltage at the first output and (2) a second output controller configured to regulate a voltage at the second output, one of the first and second output controllers configured to reduce a drive signal to a corresponding one of the first and second synchronous rectifier circuits when a corresponding voltage at one of the first and second outputs exceeds a voltage proportional to the weighted sum.

Abstract:

For use with a reserve battery couplable to a charging circuit capable of providing a charging current to the reserve battery, a mode selection circuit and a method of operation thereof. The mode selection circuit includes, in one embodiment, (1) a signal generator that generates a signal based on a temperature of the reserve battery and (2) a mode-changing circuit, coupled to the signal generator, that accepts the signal and selects an alternative one of: (a) a non-charge mode in which the charging current is substantially interrupted when the temperature is greater than a reference temperature and (b) a charge mode in which the charging current is provided to the reserve battery when the temperature is less than the reference temperature.

For use with a three-phase boost converter having a primary stage with a primary rectifier and a primary boost switch coupled between an input and output of the three-phase boost converter, an auxiliary stage, a method of reducing input current total harmonic distortion (THD) at the input of the three-phase boost converter, and a three-phase boost converter employing the auxiliary stage and method are provided. In one embodiment, the auxiliary stage includes: (1) an auxiliary rectifier coupled to the primary rectifier, (2) first, second and third auxiliary boost inductors interposed between the primary rectifier and the auxiliary rectifier and (3) an auxiliary boost switch, interposed between the auxiliary rectifier and the output, that conducts to induce corresponding phase currents through the first, second and third auxiliary boost inductors thereby reducing input current total harmonic distortion (THD) at the input of the three-phase boost converter.

Abstract:

For use with a power factor correction circuit, a current mode controller, a method of operating current mode control to achieve power factor correction thereof and a power supply incorporating the controller or the method. In one embodiment, the controller includes: (1) a modulator, coupled to a switch in the power factor correction circuit, that senses an electrical characteristic and a current passing through the power factor correction circuit and provides, in response thereto, a control signal to the switch and (2) a compensation circuit, coupled to an input of the power factor correction circuit, that provides a compensation signal to the modulator that is a function of a rectified line voltage provided to the input of the power factor correction circuit. The compensation signal causes the modulator to modify the control signal to reduce a total harmonic distortion (THD) of the power factor correction circuit.

Abstract:

For use in a boost converter having first and second boost switches coupled in parallel, a snubber for, and method of, improving current sharing between the first and second boost switches. In one embodiment, the snubber includes: (1) first and second snubber inductors, series-coupled with the first and second boost switches, respectively, that limit a flow rate of the electrical current in the first and second switches, respectively, as a function of a rate of the flow and (2) a conductive path, including a first zener diode coupled to a first node between the first snubber inductor and the first boost switch and a second zener diode coupled to a second node between the second snubber inductor and the second boost switch, that conducts a turn-off energy of said first and second boost switches from the first and second nodes toward an output of the boost converter.
