Abstract:

A method, system, and computer readable code for validating that a document or executable to be served from a server is the same original document or executable placed on the server by the legitimate author or owner. Digital signatures are stored with each file available for serving from, or executing from, a server. When a file is requested by a user, the contents of the requested file are validated (i. e. authenticated) using this digital signature. If the validation does not succeed, the file is not served to the userâinstead, the user is told that the requested file was not found. A number of optimizations are defined, including caching validated files and/or caching computed digests.

Abstract:

A technique for compressing certificate information for use in portable credit instruments having limited storage capacity. An end user certificate typically actually comprises a chain of certificates, as SET transactions require not only the end user certificate and its parent certificates. Each certificate in the certificate chain is compared to a template for that certificate, and the differences are stored. Redundant differences within each certificate are deleted, as are differences which may be derived from differences stored for other certificates in the certificate chain. The remaining stored differences are then recorded on an end user credit instrument, such as a smart card. Preferably, the certificate chain is then recreated for verification purposes before the card is issued. PER encoding may also be employed to further compress the certificate information to be recorded on the credit instrument.

Abstract:

A method, computer program product, and system for answering a wireless telephone is provided. In one embodiment, the wireless telephone receives an incoming call and then determines whether the user has placed the phone in automatic call answering mode. If it is determined that automatic call answering has been selected by a user, then the phone answers the incoming call by providing the calling party with an indication that the user will take the call momentarily, such as by sending a voice message indicating that the user is busy but will take the call momentarily and instructing the calling party to not hang up. The phone also places itself into mute mode until the user has taken the incoming call to prevent the calling party from overhearing conversations that may be taking place around the user until the user has determined that it is convenient to take the phone call. In other embodiments, the wireless telephone allows the user to carry on conversations without speaking through selection of appropriate prerecorded or generated phrases.

A technique permitting an X. 509 certificate to simultaneously support more than one cryptographic algorithm. An alternative public key and alternative signature are provided as extensions in the body of the certificate. These extensions define a second (or more) cryptographic algorithm which may be utilized to verify the certificate. Abstract:

Techniques are disclosed for deterring theft of media recording devices. Input received from a sensor, or some portion of the input, is encrypted prior to storing a media file. A decryption key must be provided when the media file is to be played back. If the key is not provided, then the file is preferably still played back, but is played back in a degraded manner. For example, a background color or other filler may be rendered in place of the encrypted portion. Additional parts of the file may also be degraded during playback. By making the playback unpleasant for the listener/viewer, theft of the recording device will be much less desirable—yet recording can continue uninterrupted, thereby minimizing disruption to legitimate users. The disclosed techniques may also be used to deter theft of the recorded media.

Abstract:

Techniques are disclosed for using business events as triggers to drive payment processing for electronic commerce. As the business logic of a merchant's e-commerce software application reaches various stages that impact payment considerations, it issues a corresponding event notification. According to preferred embodiments, these event notifications are processed by a policy engine, which locates policy information or rules previously configured for that event. Actions are then carried out, based on the configured policy. The merchant e-commerce application is therefore shielded from the details of the underlying payment processing. New payment types can be provided, and existing payment types can be modified if necessary, by adding/modifying policies; the merchant's e-commerce application does not need to change. This event-driven model allows application developers to focus on creating software for the merchant's key business requirements, and makes it easier to maintain the software.
