A method is disclosed for improving the cooling of equipment lubricated by functional fluids, such as power train fluids, by lubricating the equipment with a functional fluid comprising a wax isomerate or hydrodewaxate base stock and at least one performance additive thus permitting a reduction in the volume of lubricant used and a concomitant reduction in the size of the lubricant reservoir and related equipment.

Abstract:

A lubricant composition including a first fluid having a viscosity from 150 cSt to 2000 cSt at 40 C. (ASTM D-445) and a traction coefficient from 0.01 to 0.025 (MTM TC Method), and a second fluid having a viscosity from 1 cSt to 30 cSt at 40 C. (ASTM D-445) and a traction coefficient from 0.008 to 0.015 (MTM TC Method). The second fluid is miscible with the first fluid. The traction coefficient of the lubricant composition is lower than the traction coefficient of the first fluid and the traction coefficient of second fluid, as determined by the MTM TC Method. Provided is also a method of reducing the traction coefficient of a lubricant composition.

Abstract:

Provided is a lubricating oil including a nonpolar lubricating oil base stock as a major component and microcapsules as a minor component. The microcapsules includes (i) a core containing a polar solvent and one or more polar lubricating oil additives having solubility in the polar solvent, and (ii) optionally a shell or membrane enclosing the core. The solubility of the polar lubricating oil additives in the nonpolar lubricating oil base stock is improved as compared to solubility achieved using a lubricating oil containing polar lubricating oil additives in a nonpolar lubricating oil base stock and not containing the microcapsules. A method of improving solubility of polar lubricating oil additives in a nonpolar lubricating oil base stock is also provided. The lubricating engine oils of this disclosure can be useful in automotive, marine, aviation, and industrial engine and machine components.
