Peanut Exec May Face Prison Sentence of 803 Years for Salmonella Outbreak

U.S. District Judge W. Louis Sands also sentenced the former executive's brother and co-defendant, Michael Parnell, to serve a20-year term for his role in the crimes. Mary Wilkerson, a former quality control manager at the peanut firm, drew a five-year prison term for her role in the disaster.
The jury also found Mary Wilkerson, the plant's quality assurance manager, guilty of obstruction of justice for hiding information about the plant's salmonella problems from investigator. But Wilkerson was acquitted on one of two obstruction counts she faced.

Peanut Corp. Executives Convicted Over Salmonella Taint
Albany, Georgia, today found Parnell and hisbrother Michael Parnell, a food broker at P.P. Sales, guilty ofconspiracy, fraud and misbranding. Another Peanut Corp.official, Mary Wilkerson, was convicted of obstruction, Peter Carr, a U.S. Justice Department spokesman, said in an e-mailedstatement.
Prosecutors say the Parnell brothers conspired to ship contaminated peanuts and hide positive salmonella tests from customers. Mary Wilkerson, the Georgia plant's quality assurance manager, also faces charges. Her lawyer opted not to make an opening statement.
Attorneys for former Peanut Corporation of America owner Stewart Parnell and for Mary Wilkerson, the quality assurance manager of his Georgia plant, presented no defense. The lawyer for Parnell's brother, Michael Parnell, called just two brief witnesses.
