The Neighborhood Housing League is a grassroots community organization (founded by The Visible Community) that empowers residents to get involved in advocating for fair, safe, and affordable housing in downtown Lewiston, Maine.

Bragging Rights:

To date, the League ran a successful campaign that added a full-time code enforcement officer to the city’s staff. This Tenant run campaign allowed for Lewiston to have a code enforcement officer that is focused specifically on the safety of housing in downtown Lewiston. The Neighborhood Housing League received CDBG grant monies through the City of Lewiston to purchase interpretation equipment this past August 2010. This interpretation equipment helps to make meetings more accessible for the greater community. An estimated 10% of Lewiston's population are recent immigrants and refugees, many of whom do not speak English or English is not their prefered language. The interpretation equipment we have allows for multiple languages to be interpreted at the same time, without slowing down meetings, events, etc. This means that hearing impared residents also benefit from the equipment. The equipment has 4 transmitters, and 20+ receivers, and can be used for simultaneous interpretation. This equipment is available to loan to any city agency, or non-profit at no cost.
