A method and apparatus are provided for treating the surface of a metal body through phase transformation, ion implantation, and/or diffusion and to form new phases of metallic materials. The method and apparatus have been shown to be particularly useful to improve the hardness and corrosion resistance of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Generally, the method comprises irradiating a portion of the metal body ( ) with a laser ( ), and directing a stream of gas ( ) onto the same portion of the metal body simultaneously with and preferably for a duration after the laser is turned off. Preferably, the laser ( ) is a carbon dioxide laser operated in a pulsed mode to control heating of the metal ( ). The gas ( ) is preferably carbon dioxide to quickly cool the metal when the laser is off, and to provide carbon atoms for deposition onto the body. The entire process may be carried out in an environment at atmospheric pressure, obviating the need for a vacuum chamber or pressure controlled furnace or similar apparatus.

Abstract:
Apparatus for suppressing fluid-borne noise in a fluid conduit ( or ) that includes a vibration sensor ( or ) for operative coupling to the conduit for providing an electrical sensor signal as a function of fluid pressure fluctuations in the conduit. A piezoelectric actuator ( or ) is adapted to be mounted on the conduit for imparting pressure fluctuations to fluid in the conduit. An electronic controller ( or ) is responsive to the sensor signal for energizing the actuator 180Â out of phase with fluid pressure fluctuations sensed by the sensor. The sensor may be either closely coupled to the actuator, or separate from the actuator and disposed upstream of the actuator with respect to the direction of fluid flow through the conduit. The sensor in the preferred embodiments of the invention comprises a piezoelectric sensor, and the actuator comprises a stack of piezoelectric elements.
An apparatus to regulate and control the temperature of an axle assembly for a vehicle. A heat pipe is inserted though the axle housing cover, the heat pipe travels the length of the cover. Near the lower region of the carrier and beneath the lubricating fluid level, the heat pipe bends to continue in the horizontal direction. Disposed about the terminal end of the heat pipe below the lubricating fluid line are a series of cooling fins. Heat generated within the lubricating fluid that is heated during operation conduit is dissipated via the cooling fins.
Methods and apparatus for plasma-assisted heat treatments are provided. The method can include initiating a heat treating plasma within a cavity () by subjecting a gas to electromagnetic radiation in the presence of a plasma catalyst (), heating the object by exposing the object to the plasma, and maintaining exposure of the object to the plasma for a sufficient period to alter at least one material property of the object.

Abstract:
The present invention is directed to an apparatus to regulate and control the temperature of a differential axle assembly. A heat pipe is inserted though the axle housing with a portion submersed in axle lubricant. Cooling fins are preferably disposed on the heat pipe both in the submersed region of the heat pipe and a portion external the housing. The heat pipe is preferably secured to and substantially accommodated by a removable cover plate which is in turn secured to the housing. The heat pipe includes an evaporative working fluid to promote heat transfer between the lubricant and external environment.

Abstract:
A system and method of carburizing a surface region of an object includes subjecting a gas to electromagnetic radiation, generated from a radiation source (), in the presence of a plasma catalyst () to initiate a plasma containing carbon. The method also includes exposing the surface region of the object to the plasma for a period of time sufficient to transfer at least some of the carbon from the plasma to the object through the first surface region.

Abstract:
Methods and apparatus are provided for plasma-assisted processing multiple work pieces in a manufacturing line. In one embodiment, the method can include placing the work pieces in movable carriers, moving the carriers on a conveyor into an irradiation zone, flowing a gas into the irradiation zone, igniting the gas in the irradiation zone to form a plasma (e.g., by subjecting the gas to electromagnetic radiation in the presence of a plasma catalyst), sustaining the plasma for a period of time sufficient to at least partially plasma process at least one of the work pieces in the irradiation zone, and advancing the conveyor to move the at least one plasma-processed work piece out of the irradiation zone. Various types of plasma catalysts are also provided.

Abstract:
A power valve assembly for use in combination with a carburetor for an internal combustion engine, where such carburetor has structure defining a fuel reservoir, is shown as having a valve body and cooperating valve member effective for opening and closing related passage means leading to the carburetor induction passage for at times supplying additional enrichening fuel flow thereto; a pressure responsive movable diaphragm has an associated actuator connected thereto and is exposed to a source of engine vacuum of varying magnitude as to at times move the valve member in a direction causing the valve member to move relative to the valve body and permit the flow of such enrichening fuel flow; the direction of movement of the diaphragm and associated actuator describing a path which is other than parallel to the path described by the direction of movement of the valve member.
