Abstract:A plasma reactor including a first dielectric having at least one slot defined therethrough, and a segmented electrode including a plurality of electrode segments, each electrode segment is disposed proximate an associated slot. Each electrode segment may be formed in different shapes, for example, a plate, bar, rim, or plug. The electrode segment may be hollow, solid, or made from a porous material. The reactor may include a second electrode and dielectric with the first and second dielectrics separated by a predetermined distance to form a channel therebetween into which the plasma exiting from the slots defined in the first dielectric is discharged. The fluid to be treated is passed through the channel and exposed to the plasma discharge. If the electrode segment is hollow or made of a porous material, then the fluid/gas to be treated may be fed into the slots defined in the first dielectric and exposed therein to the maximum plasma density. Thus, the fluid/gas to be treated may be exposed to the plasma discharge both in the slots as well as in the channel between the two dielectrics.

Abstract:A device and method for detecting the presence of living organisms in a structure or behind a wall or partition utilizes a microwave or radio-frequency one or more transceivers which generate separate and distinct interrogating signals and receives separate and distinct signals reflected from a structure and living organisms within it. The reflected signals received by each of the transceivers are processed, for instance by a microprocessor, so as to provide output signals that indicate the presence or absence of a living organism in the structure or behind wall or partition. The microprocessor distinguishes and differentiate signals from different living organisms and from false indication of the presence of living organisms, thereby enabling the detection of living organisms despite the existence of motion signals caused by non-living organism motion. Similarly, the device can distinguish between the biological characteristics, such as respiration rates, of targets to determine if the targets are of the type sought, for example, human targets as opposed to pets or insects.

Abstract:A “buy” button is provided on devices that receive content material to facilitate a purchase of content related material as the content material is being presented to a consumer. If, while listening to or viewing content material from a provider, the consumer decides the purchase the content material, or an item associated with the content material, the consumer activates a “buy” button on the device that is rendering the content material. The rendering device associates an item identifier associated with the content material to this “buy” command, and forms a purchase request containing this item identifier. If the rendering device has a receive-only capability relative to the provider of the content material, the purchase request is stored until the rendering device is brought in contact with a content access device that is able to transmit to the provider. The purchase request, including certification information such as a customer identification number, a credit card number, and the like, is communicated to the provider by the content access device or by a rendering device that is able to transmit to the provider. In a preferred embodiment, to facilitate a purchase of copy-controlled content material, the rendering device includes a memory that stores the content material while it is being received, and a controller that controls access to this memory until an access authorization is received from the provider in response to the purchase request. A transfer device is also provided that facilitates the communication of purchase requests and content material between the content access device and other rendering devices.
