Abstract:A flexible infrared delivery apparatus useful for endoscopic infrared coagulating of human or animal blood and tissue or for other uses employs a source of infrared radiation which is not a laser and an elongated flexible fiber optic member which transmits radiation from the source to a contact portion at a distal end of the member and to a material such as human or animal tissue proximate the contact portion. The elongated member has an outer diameter which enables it to be inserted into and through an accessory channel of an endoscope to view the human or animal tissue or material to be treated with infrared radiation. A connector on the proximal end of the member allows the elongated member to be quickly connected to and disconnected from the apparatus where the member is aligned for receiving infrared radiation from the source. The contact portion defines a size, direction and shape of a radiation delivery area from the member to the human or animal tissue or material proximate the contact portion.

Abstract:In a public key cryptosystem employing the El-Gamal algorithm, secret fresh random numbers are generated at a server and private keys of users, as encrypted with a symmetric algorithm by using individual user identifying keys determined by hashing the users' respective passphrases or biometric information (fingerprint, voiceprint, retina scan, or face scan) are maintained in a store accessible to the server, and the fresh random numbers and encrypted private keys are transmitted to the user equipment when needed via a network which is not secure. In order to prevent an attacker from discovering the random numbers or employing formerly used random numbers in a block replay attack, an interchange in the nature of a challenge response protocol is employed which passes at least one secret fresh random number from the server to the user equipment while also authenticating the user to the server. In this interchange, a first random number to be distributed to the user for use in signing a document and a second random number which is to be used by the user in forming a signature of a hashing together of the first and second random numbers as part of the challenge response protocol, are supplied to the user equipment in encrypted form together with a freshness value, and a signature by the server of a hashing together of the first and second random numbers and the freshness value.

Abstract:In one aspect, a handheld lighting system is disclosed, which comprises a handheld housing extending from a proximal end to a distal end, and a light module disposed at least partially in the housing. The handheld lighting system further includes a removable and replaceable power module that is coupled to the housing (e.g., it is at least partially disposed within the housing) and is electrically coupled to the light module, e.g., through a pair of electrical leads, for providing electrical power thereto. Light intensity from the light module may be controlled from a knob on the power module. Various adapters can allow the lighting system to attach to a multitude of medical, industrial, dental or veterinary endoscopes or other instruments.

Abstract:In one aspect, a light module is disclosed, which includes a housing providing a hollow chamber extending from a proximal end to a distal end, and a lens positioned in the hollow chamber, where the lens has a lens body comprising an input surface for receiving light from a light source and an output surface through which light exits the lens body, said lens further comprising a collar at least partially encircling said lens body. The light module further includes at least one shoulder on which the lens collar can be seated for positioning the lens within the housing. A light source, e.g., an LED, is coupled to the hollow chamber, e.g., at its proximal end, for providing light to the lens. In some embodiments, an optical window is disposed in the hollow chamber and is optically coupled to the output surface of the lens such that the light exiting the lens passes through the optical window before exiting the light module. In some embodiments, the shoulder can be formed as part of the housing. In other embodiments, the shoulder can be provided by a sleeve disposed in the module's housing.
