Abstract:A copy protection system for protecting content wherein a ticket and a watermark are created, utilizing a first time reference (TD) and a one-way function, to indicate the copy protection status of the content. A source device produces the ticket and watermark using a first time reference and a hashing function. The source device provides a data stream containing the content, the ticket, the watermark, and the first time reference (TD) to the receiver device. The receiver device determines if the first time reference (TD) is contained within a time window determined by a second time reference. When, the first time reference (TD) is contained within the time window, the receiver compares the ticket to the watermark using the first time reference (TD) and the one-way function, and based on the comparison, produces a signal indicating the copy protection status of the content.

Abstract:A DES permutation is presented that has minimal crossovers between the DES 64-bit structure and 32-bit data structures, allows for efficient data transfers via a 32-bit data bus. Every other bit location in the DES 64-bit data structure is mapped to a contiguous bit location in the 32-bit data structure, in a sequential order. The sequential mapping to contiguous bit locations minimizes potential crossovers that are area inefficient, and allows for encoding algorithms that effect the mapping by using incrementing or shifting operators only.

Abstract:A method and system are provided for preventing the unauthorized playback of broadcasted digital data streams. The method includes the step of embedding a watermark in a digital data stream. The digital data stream having the embedded watermark is encrypted. The encrypted digital data stream is broadcasted with a ticket. The encrypted digital data stream and the ticket are received. The ticket is saved and the encrypted digital data stream is provided to a decryption device to decrypt the digital data stream. The decrypted digital data stream is received from the decryption device. The watermark is extracted from the decrypted digital data stream. A one-way cryptographic hashing function is applied to the saved ticket. The hashed ticket-is compared to the extracted watermark. Playback of the digital data stream is prevented, when the hashed ticket does not match the extracted watermark.

Abstract:A usage-limit is associated with each copy of copy-protected material. A conforming playback device determines how much usage has been made of the copy, and only plays the copy-protected material if the usage is within the associated usage-limit of the copy. In a preferred embodiment of this invention, the providing source of the copy contains a total-usage-measure that is allocated among each of the provided copies of the copy-protected material, thereby allowing for more than one copy of the copy-protected material to be produced, or âchecked-outâ from the providing source. When a copy of the copy-protected material is subsequently returned, or âchecked-inâ to the providing source, the usage allocation associated with this copy is returned to the total-usage-value. In this manner, if a particular copy of the copy-protected material is lost, damaged, or misplaced, the loss of value to the purchaser is merely a reduction in the available total-usage. In a preferred embodiment, the parameters associated with the usage-limit are communicated via the copy of the material in a secure manner, so that an illicit provider cannot alter these parameters.

Abstract:In a computer network, documents are produced, the document is hashed to produce a fingerprint, and the fingerprint is encrypted to sign the document then the document signature is transmitted from the user system to a secure computer system. The secure computer system creates a time stamp including the document signature and a digital time. The secure system signs the time stamp to verify its origin. The time stamp and notarys signature are transmitted from the secure system to the users system. The user has access to the notarys public key which is used for determining whether the time stamp is authentic. Then, if the document is revised, the revised document is hashed and the hash is combined with an indication that the revision is related to the original document. The indication could be a hash of the original document, the original document signature, the notarys time stamp for the original document, or the notarys signature for the original document.

Abstract:A random number generator is disclosed that uses the meta-stable behavior of flip-flops. The output of the flip-flop is compared to an input waveform to determine if the output signal does not match the input signal, indicating a meta-stable state. When a meta-stable event is detected an output bit is provided as a random bit. In one variation, an even random number distribution is obtained by âmarkingâ half of the zeroes as âonesâ and the other half of the zeroes as âzeroesâ and half of the ones as âonesâ and the other half of the ones as âzeroes. â In further variations, the (i) delay between the clock and the input are varied to cause the meta-stable behavior more often and (ii) multiple circuits with n different flip-flops are utilized so that at least one of the n circuits will be meta-stable at a given time.
