Abstract:

A blower housing of novel two-piece construction is comprised of first and second housing parts of stamped or drawn sheet metal that are attached together. The two-piece construction provides the housing with two interior portions separated by an interior wall. The interior wall has an opening that is spaced from the aligned exhaust opening of the heater and the output opening of the housing. This creates a winding exhaust gas flow path through the blower housing. The interior wall is also provided with a recessed cavity that receives a portion of a fan rotated by a motor supported by the blower housing. Positioning of at least a portion of the fan in the cavity reduces the overall height dimension of the blower housing and facilitates the retrofitting of the blower housing between an existing exhaust opening of a heater and an axially aligned flue pipe.

Abstract:

A gas delivery system for an appliance, such as a water heater, including a gas control valve and a blower housing assembly which are mounted to the water heater proximate one another. The blower housing assembly includes a motor for driving an impeller within the blower housing, and an outlet of the blower housing is connected to the gas burner assembly of the water heater. A gas supply conduit extends from the control valve into the blower housing, and the outlet of the gas supply conduit is disposed within the blower housing interior near the blower housing inlet and the central portion of the impeller. In operation, rotation of the impeller draws a flow of air through the blower housing. Concurrently, gas is supplied through the gas supply conduit to the interior of the blower housing near the impeller, and the gas is mixed with the flow of air to form an air/gas mixture which is supplied through the outlet of the blower housing to the gas burner for combustion. In this manner, the gas is pre-mixed with air within the blower housing before being supplied to the burner assembly, and wherein combustion of the air/gas mixture results in a cleaner combustion with reduced nitrous oxide emissions.

An electric machine is described. The electric machine includes a rotor comprising a rotor disk and a plurality of permanent magnets magnetically coupled to the rotor disk. Abstract:

A motor controller for a burner system includes an inverter that supplies current to a motor that rotates a draft inducer fan. A processor is coupled to the inverter and receives a signal from a system controller, and in response instructs the inverter to supply a first current, during a first period, to the motor to rotate the fan to produce a first mass flow through the burner system, the first mass flow having a first mass flow rate greater than a threshold to actuate a vacuum switch. The processor then instructs the inverter to supply a second current, during a second period starting at an expiration of the first period, to the motor to rotate the fan to produce a second mass flow through the burner system, the second mass flow having a target mass flow rate for normal operation of the burner.

Abstract:

A blower assembly is attached to a water heater having an exhaust opening, the assembly includes a tank cap attached to a tank of the heater. A recess surface formed in the exterior surface of the cap. A member has a first surface that is connected to the tank cap to form a cover plenum between the cap and the member. The blower includes a motor, an air moving member connected to the motor and a blower housing having an interior containing the fan. The blower housing has an input opening that communicates the blower housing interior with the member output opening. The blower housing, the member and the tank cap provide an exhaust gas flow path from the exhaust opening of the heater through the cover plenum, through the blower housing interior and out the output opening.
