Abstract:

A coating composition particularly suitable for coating poly(phenylene oxide) comprises aqueous medium-dispersed particles of: A) between about 30 and about 35 wt %, of a first styrene-acrylic polymer formed of monomers, between about 50 and about 80 mole % of which monomers are styrene or substituted styrene monomers, between about 2 and about 15 mole percent of which monomers are acrylonitrile, and between about 18 and about 48 mole percent of which are acrylic monomers, said first styrene-acrylic polymer having an acid number of about 15 or below; B) between about 30 and 35 wt %, of an acrylic second polymer formed of monomers, at least about 90 mole percent of which monomers are acrylate monomers, balance other , -ethylenically unsaturated monomers, said acrylic second polymer having an acid number between 0 and about 25; and C) between about 30 and about 40 wt % of an acrylic-urethane hybrid polymer.

Abstract:

The present invention provides a method of coating substrates with at least two coatings, wherein the same polymer or resin basecoat is employed in both of the two coatings. The first coating layer also includes an adhesion promoter, thereby eliminating a primer layer. Further, the present invention provides an automated or continuous coating line or coating system including a series of coating booths, each for applying one of a series waterborne or solvent borne coatings, wherein at least the first and second booth each comprises an applicator device and feed or supply controller for feeding a desired amount of the same basecoat formulation to an applicator device, and, further wherein the first booth comprises a feed or supply controller for feeding a desired amount of an adhesion promoter to the at least one applicator device. The coating line or system enables the continuous formation of primeness multi-layer coatings, e.g. basecoat, colorcoat and clearcoat on automotive plastic substrates, from a single paint composition, mixing in color or adhesion components as needed in each booth.

Abstract:

A divider for organizing and/or separating a plurality of disks stacked on a spindle storage device is provided. The divider includes a planar body having a tab portion which includes a surface for providing an identifier. The divider is constructed to be insertable and removable between adjacent disks stacked on a spindle without having to remove a disk from the spindle. The tab portion may be bendable or foldable with respect to the body portion of the divider so that the tab portion will conform to portions of the storage device. The divider may be used with spindles having either a horizontal or vertical orientation.

Abstract:

A tissue container which is mounted to the visor of a vehicle and which can be filled with tissues or a box of tissues without removing the container from the visor. The tissue container has a fairly narrow width so that it takes less head room in smaller vehicles. However, for larger vehicles, an increased number of tissues, which are greater in volume than the volume of the housing of the tissue container, may be inserted in the container. The container is mounted to the visor using elastic cords which stretch to accommodate the increased volume of the tissues or a larger box of tissues inserted in the container which has a greater volume than the volume inside the housing of the container.

Abstract:

The present invention relates to a method of preparing an aqueous dispersion of multistage polymer particles comprising contacting under emulsion polymerization conditions and in a staged fashion an aqueous dispersion of carboxylic acid functionalized core polymer particles with first monomers and second monomers. The core comprises structural units of a high Thydrophobic monomer and/or the first monomers comprise a high Thydrophobic monomer, and the second monomers comprise at least 80 percent styrene. The high Thydrophobic monomer is cyclohexyl methacrylate, isobornyl methacrylate, 4-t-butyl methacrylate, t-butylstyrene, or n-butyl methacrylate, or a combination thereof. The multistage polymer particles are useful as opaque polymers, which are used in pigmented coating formulations to reduce the load of TiO. The particles exhibit excellent collapse resistance and unusually low dry bulk density, and do not require acrylonitrile to achieve this desired combination of properties.

Abstract:

The present invention relates to a composition comprising an aqueous dispersion of multistage polymer particles comprising a first and a second phase, wherein the first phase comprises structural units of a carboxylic acid monomer or a salt thereof, and a nonionic ethylenically unsaturated monomer; and wherein the second phase comprises a first and second polymer, wherein the first phase or the second phase first polymer or both comprise structural units of a high Thydrophobic monomer; and wherein the second phase second polymer comprises at least 80 percent structural units of styrene. The high Thydrophobic monomer is defined as being one or more of the following monomers: cyclohexyl methacrylate, isobornyl methacrylate, 4-t-butyl methacrylate, t-butylstyrene, or n-butyl methacrylate. The multistage polymer particles are useful as opaque polymers, which are used in pigmented coating formulations to reduce the load of TiO. The particles exhibit excellent collapse resistance and unusually low dry bulk density, and do not require acrylonitrile to achieve this desired combination of properties.
