Abstract:

An installation and support apparatus or assembly is provided for use in combination with an electric machine , such as a starter-alternator, which is adapted to be operatively installed between the engine block and the transmission assembly of a vehicle. The apparatus includes a stationary support member or member , an inner or crankshaft engaging bearing , and an outer or rotor engaging bearing. Member cooperates with bearings and to automatically create or form a relatively precise and uniform gap between the stator assembly and the rotor assembly of electric machine , and further provides independent and additional support to the electric machine and the vehicles crankshaft.

Abstract:

Freeze protection of an on-board emissions treatment substance storage and distribution system in a vehicle includes moving the emissions treatment substance away from a primary fuel/vapor area after filling of the emissions treatment system. In one embodiment an on-board emissions treatment system has a fill tube with a portion extending into a primary fuel fill pipe to facilitate co-fueling of the primary fuel and emissions treatment substance. A pressure differential or vacuum is created in the emissions treatment fill tube after filling to move the emissions treatment substance away from a check valve disposed at the terminal end of the fill tube to prevent freezing of the check valve after filling. The emissions treatment substance may be moved out of the co-located portion of the fill tube to an area where passive or active heating of the fill tube may be applied.

A system and method for treating exhaust gasses from an engine is described. In one example, the exhaust gasses are routed from the engine to atmosphere through a helical exhaust passage. The helical exhaust passage includes a plurality of spatially separated exhaust passages that separates the exhaust flow into separated smaller flows, wherein the smaller flows are re-introduced into a common passage and re-combined to form a single exhaust flow, and wherein the plurality of spatially separated exhaust passages induces a helical flow pattern within the re-combined exhaust flow.

Abstract:

Systems and methods are provided for injecting liquid reductant into an engine exhaust. An example system includes a gas deflector positioned upstream of an injector where the gas deflector is configured to create a high pressure zone upstream of the deflector and a low pressure zone downstream of the deflector surrounding the injector outlet. A bypass flow passage diverts exhaust flow from the high pressure zone upstream of the deflector to allow the bypassed portion of exhaust to flow into the exhaust gas stream to form a gas shield for a liquid reductant spray from the injector. In this way, it is possible to reduce deposit formation and accumulation in the exhaust system.

Abstract:

A system for injecting from an injector into a duct of an engine system is provided. The system may include a first flange on a duct connection side, a second flange on an injector connection side, a stand-off separating the first flange from the second flange to form an air gap therebetween, and a seal offset from at least one of the first and the second flanges and located within the airgap and between the first flange and the second flange.
