Abstract:

A method of modifying a polyethylene material is accomplished by providing a polyethylene resin. The initial rheological breadth of the polyethylene resin is determined. The resin is then modified to adjust the rheological breadth of the polyethylene from the initial rheological breadth to a different rheological breadth that corresponds to a desired resin property, such as haze. A method for predicting clarity and rheological breadth properties is also provided, which utilizes a template of measured properties for polyethylene resins.

Abstract:

An improved method of manufacturing blown polyolefin films with increased bubble stability and higher blown film production rates is disclosed. A method in which the amounts and ratios of known antioxidant polymer film additives (phosphites and phenolics) are controlled to provide limited long chain branching (LCB) and greater rheological breadth in a polyethylene melt to improve both processing characteristics and mechanical properties in the resulting film.

Abstract:

Disclosed is a method of modifying polyethylene to increase its ability to resist the transmission of water vapor. The polyethylene is modified to increase long chain branching resulting in lower water vapor transmission rates in films prepared with the modified polyethylene. The polyethylene can be modified using peroxides, air and even by admixture with high long chain branching content polyethylene. The polyethylene, particularly when in the form of films, can be used for preparing packaging where sorption of flavor, aroma, or colorant compounds must be minimized.

Abstract:

Process for the production of an oriented polyolefin film using multi-component polymer compositions. One polymer component comprises an isotactic propylene homopolymer produced by the polymerization of propylene with a Ziegler-Natta catalyst. A secondary component is a Ziegler-Natta polymerized ethylene-propylene random copolymer or a metallocene-polymerized ethylene-propylene random copolymer produced by the polymerization of propylene and ethylene in the presence of a metallocene polymerization catalyst. The Ziegler-Natta polymerized copolymer is produced by the polymerization of ethylene and propylene in the presence of a Ziegler-Natta catalyst and contains no more than 0. 5 wt. % ethylene and has a xylene solubles content of at least 2 wt. %. The primary and secondary polymer components are mixed together to provide a blend in which, when the secondary component is a Ziegler-Natta polypropylene, is present in an amount within the range of 5–25 wt. % and the secondary polymer component is a metallocene-based copolymer present in an amount of less than 5 wt. %.

Abstract:

It has been discovered that the properties of sheet or film materials of broad molecular weight distribution ethylene/propylene rubber impact-modified heterophasic copolymer (ICP) can be improved by blending the ICP with a second polyolefin. The second polyolefin may be a syndiotactic polypropylene (sPP), a random copolymer (RCP) of propylene and comonomer (e. g. ethylene and/or butene) made using a Ziegler-Natta or metallocene catalyst, medium density polyethylene (MDPE), linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), or low crystalline copolymer of propylene/α-olefin. Improvements include, but are not necessarily limited to, reduced motor amps, lower secant modulus, increased dart drop strength, increased gloss, reduced haze, increased elongation to yield, elimination of stress whitening, improved puncture resistance, and decreased seal initiation temperature. This sheet of film materials may be co-extruded with other resins or laminated with other materials after extrusion.
