Abstract:

A floating-point unit of a computer includes a floating-point computation unit, floating-point registers and a floating-point status register. The floating-point status register may include a main status field and one or more alternate status fields. Each of the status fields contains flag and control information. Different floating-point operations may be associated with different status fields. Subfields of the floating-point status register may be updated dynamically during operation. The control bits of the alternate status fields may include a trap disable bit for deferring interruptions during speculative execution. A widest range exponent control bit in the status fields may be used to prevent interruptions when the exponent of an intermediate result is within the range of the register format but exceeds the range of the memory format. The floating-point data may be stored in big endian or little endian format.

Abstract:

A method is disclosed for preparing a patterned continuous polymeric brush on a substrate surface. The method generally involves functionalization of the substrate surface followed by surface-initiated polymerization at the initiation sites so provided, e. g. , using a living free radical polymerization technique or the like, whereby a covalently bound continuous polymeric brush results, with acid-labile groups present throughout. An acid is then applied to the continuous polymer brush in a predetermined pattern, under conditions that result in removal of the acid-labile groups in at least one first region of the continuous polymer brush but not in at least one second region of the continuous polymer brush. In a preferred embodiment, the acid is a photogenerated acid resulting from imagewise irradiation of a photoacid generator applied as a film or coating to the surface-bound polymer brush.

A method and system for conducting a transaction over a network is disclosed. The network includes a first system and a second system. The method and system comprise initiating a transaction, comparing a value of the first system with a value of the second system and continuing the transaction based on the comparison. Through the use of the present invention, a client can download for-fee files as often as necessary in spite of potential lost connections. Consequently, the client can download files he or she has paid for with the assurance that he or she will pay just once because payment is not for the content, but for an encryption key that is capable of being utilized by the client system to subsequently decrypt the downloaded file.

Abstract:

A method and system for detecting conflicts in replicated data in a database network that includes a plurality of computer systems, each having a table which includes replicated data includes providing a column to the table in each system which indicates whether replicated data in the table is current for the system. The method further includes determining whether replicated data in the table in the system is current based on a value in the column when a request to access the replicated data in the table is received. Through aspects of the method and system of the present invention, conflict detection is delayed until a request to access the replicated data in the system is submitted. Thus, no conflict detection is required during the replication cycle, nor is any conflict resolution required during the replication cycle. In an environment with many thousands or millions of rows being replicated, but with few actual conflicts, delaying the detection and resolution until the system actually accesses the replicated data greatly improves the overall performance of the replication environment.

One or more embodiments of the invention provide a method, apparatus, and article of manufacture for presenting a help source. A help system is maintained that comprises a single set of one or more help source files. A request is received by the help system to present one or more of the help source files (or information from within one or more of the help source files). Abstract:

An apparatus includes a receiver, an error detection unit, and an acknowledgement unit. The receiver may receive frames of data from a transmitter unit of a second apparatus via a first communication path. The error detection unit may detect data errors in the frames of data received via the first communication path. The acknowledgment unit may maintain an acknowledgement indicator indicative of whether frames received by the apparatus are error free. In response to the error detection unit detecting an error, the acknowledgement unit may indicate an error condition exists by freezing a value of the acknowledgement indicator, or alternatively the acknowledgement unit may set a current value of the acknowledgement indicator to a predetermined error value. Further, the apparatus may successively convey values of the acknowledgement indicator to the second apparatus via a second communication path while the apparatus is receiving frames.
