Abstract:
A planetary gear arrangement having at least three rotatable members with intermeshing gears and a primary torque path defined therein. At least one active friction damper is disposed between two of the planetary gear members, for example, a sun gear and a ring gear. The active damper is selectively operable to apply frictional engagement between the two members with which it is interconnected to establish a controlled secondary torque path therebetween. The active damper is effective to reduce gear lash changes between the gear members of a planetary assembly.

Abstract:
The present invention provides a hydraulic active damping system to damp gears, thereby reducing the occurrence of gear rattle or noise. The active nature of the present invention will allow the drag within the bearing to which the gear mounts to be selectively increased, by pressurizing an enclosed or specialized bearing with fluid during critical events. The pressure within the specialized bearing is subsequently decreased, thereby only increasing the system drag at critical operating conditions. The present invention also provides a method of damping gears by introducing pressurized fluid into a specialized bearing and subsequently reducing the fluid pressure therein.

The present invention provides a damping apparatus and/or method for a rotatable shaft. The damping apparatus includes a damper housing disposed about a portion of the rotatable shaft. A variable viscosity fluid, such as a magneto-rheological fluid, is disposed within the damper housing and in contact with the rotatable shaft. A control device is operatively connected with respect to the variable viscosity fluid. The control device is configured or operable to control the viscosity of the variable viscosity fluid and correspondingly control the amount of rotational resistance applied to the rotatable shaft.

Abstract:
A vehicle driveline includes a hybrid transmission, having a mass damper that provides noise and vibration damping over a broad range of frequencies. The damper provides damping at a desired frequency and all greater frequencies to act as a low pass filter for noise and vibration. A specific mass and inertia for the damper are selected to target the desired frequency range. Due to the hybrid design of the transmission the energy that is used to rotate the damper and provide the desired inertia is recovered by at least one motor/generator within the transmission during deceleration of the vehicle.
