Abstract:
A modular disc prosthesis system is provided that allows a disc prosthesis to be constructed, either pre- or intra-operatively, to have a desired degree of freedom or constraint when positioned between endplates of adjacent vertebrae. In particular, the components can be assembled to form a disc prosthesis having a center of rotation that is constrained or fixed such that, when the disc prosthesis is implanted between endplates of adjacent vertebrae, the adjacent vertebrae have one degree of freedom and move about a fixed center of rotation. Alternatively, one or more of the same components and one or more additional components of the system can be used to construct a disc prosthesis having a center of rotation that is unconstrained or that floats such that, when the disc prosthesis is implanted between the endplates of adjacent vertebrae, the adjacent vertebrae have multiple degrees of freedom and can move about a floating or moving center of rotation, i. e. , a center of rotation that is not fixed.

Abstract:
The invention includes a system and method for loosening of tissue. In one embodiment, an intervertebral tissue removal system includes at least one abrading member for abrading tissue in an area to be cleared and at least one expandable member operable to be expanded from a first condition to a second condition, wherein the volume defined by the at least one expandable member in the second condition is greater than the volume defined by the at least one expandable member in the first condition, the at least one expandable member operably connected to the at least one abrading member such that as the at least one expandable member expands from the first condition to the second condition, the at least one abrading member is moved from a first position to a second position. The system includes an expansion media for insertion within the at least one expandable member and an expansion media conduit for delivering the expansion media to the at least one expandable member to expand the at least one expandable member from the first condition to the second condition.

Abstract:
A method of performing a procedure on an intervertebral disc includes inserting a cannulated delivery tube through an opening in an annulus fibrosus of the intervertebral disc, positioning an expandable portion of the tube within the opening in the annulus fibrosus, expanding the expandable portion into contact with the annulus fibrosus about the opening to create a seal between the expandable portion and the annulus fibrosus, performing a procedure through the cannulated delivery tube within the annulus fibrosis, removing the tube, and closing the opening in the annulus fibrosus.
An installation tool is provided for the efficient and effective placement of an implant between adjacent bone structures, preferably adjacent vertebral bodies, and for the subsequent removal of the device without displacement of the implant. The installation tool generally includes a pair of opposed levers, a pusher assembly disposed between the levers, and an installation tool removing element having a mass slidably disposed with respect to at least a portion of the pusher assembly. The levers are effective to separate adjacent bone structures, such as adjacent vertebrae, upon insertion of an implant. The pusher assembly is slidably movable with respect to the levers, and is effective to insert an implant between the adjacent bone structures. Once the implant is positioned between the adjacent vertebrae, the mass can be used to apply a proximally directed force to the opposed levers, thereby removing the instrument from the space between the adjacent bone structures.
An alignment verification device includes a spacer element and an alignment guide surface. The spacer element has proximal and distal portions and an insert engaging element disposed on the distal portion. The proximal portion can be of such a designed so as to serve as a handle for the verification device. The alignment guide surface is affixed to the spacer element and defines an alignment orifice. The alignment orifice is spaced apart from the insert engaging element. A prosthesis is also disclosed having an engaging element and a visual indicator element. The engaging element is configured to releasably engage the prosthesis engaging element of the alignment verification device so that, upon engagement, the alignment orifice is spaced apart from the visual indicator element. The engagement of the alignment verification device with the prosthesis can thus be adapted to permit a sighting element of an image obtaining device to be aligned with the alignment orifice and the visual indicator element so that an image obtaining device is aligned with the prosthesis in a known orientation.
