Abstract:
A multi-beam electron gun provides a plurality N of cathode assemblies comprising a cathode, anode, and focus electrode, each cathode assembly having a local cathode axis and also a central cathode point defined by the intersection of the local cathode axis with the emitting surface of the cathode. Each cathode is arranged with its central point positioned in a plane orthogonal to a device central axis, with each cathode central point an equal distance from the device axis and with an included angle of 360/N between each cathode central point. The local axis of each cathode has a cathode divergence angle with respect to the central axis which is set such that the diverging magnetic field from a solenoidal coil is less than 5 degrees with respect to the projection of the local cathode axis onto a cathode reference plane formed by the device axis and the central cathode point, and the local axis of each cathode is also set such that the angle formed between the cathode reference plane and the local cathode axis results in minimum spiraling in the path of the electron beams in a homogenous magnetic field region of the solenoidal field generator.

Abstract:
The present invention provides a method of re-entering and reclosing a cable splice case enclosing a splice between first and second cables and comprising a wrap-around sleeve and a closure channel, the sleeve having opposing longitudinal edge portions, each bearing a rail, the edge portions having been brought together around the splice such that the rails are adjacent one another and the closure channel being positioned over the adjacent rails, which method comprises: (a) removing a portion of the sleeve from the splice, leaving an end portion of the sleeve attached to the first cable; (b) removing a portion of the channel from the rails of the remaining portion; (c) positioning over the rails of the end portion at a position where the portion of channel has been removed a hot-melt adhesive plug, the plug having a recess for receipt of the rails; (d) positioning a heat-shrinkable reclosure sleeve around the splice, the reclosure sleeve extending from the adhesive plug at the end portion; and (e) heating to cause the reclosure sleeve to shrink into engagement with the end portion and to cause the plug to soften and form a seal.

Abstract:
A microwave-driven plasma spraying apparatus can be utilized for uniform high-powered spraying. The plasma sprayer is constructed without a dielectric discharge tube, so very high microwave powers can be utilized. Moreover, the plasma sprayer is relatively free of contamination caused by deposits of heat-fusible material.

Abstract:
Free-electron lasers and masers are modified by eliminating the resonator cavity as such. The feedback mechanism, essential to oscillation, is distributed through and integrated with the transmission line which guides the electromagnetic wave at the active region where interaction with the electron beam takes place. The feedback structure is created by perturbations in the transmission line along the length thereof at the locations of the zero electric field lines of a desired oscillatory standing wave mode. The perturbations may take the form of axial, helical, and azimuthal deformation of the transmission line.

Abstract:
A method of forming a branch-off seal between a heat-shrinkable sleeve and at least two substrates, which comprises the steps of: (a) positioning the substrates within the heat-shrinkable sleeve; (b) forming at least two heat-shrinkable terminal conduits by positioning a clip having at least three elongate legs over the outer surface of the heat-shrinkable sleeve at an open end thereof, wherein at least two of said legs are positioned externally of the sleeve, the substrates are within the terminal conduits and at least one of said legs is positioned internally of the sleeve, and (c) while the clip remains on the outer surface of the heat-shrinkable sleeve, applying heat so as to effect shrinkage of the sleeve and to form the desired seal; in which the leg positioned internally has a coating of heat-softenable sealing material that extends beyond its distal end, the extension being such that at least a portion of extending material does not flow significantly during step (c).

Abstract:
A complex cavity gyrotron designed for stable operation at high order modes. The device comprises circuitry for generating an annular electron beam, a coupled cavity disposed coaxially with the electron beam and having a first and second adjacent coaxial sections with the dimensions of these coaxial sections adjusted so that different modes with the same azimuthal eigen number but different radial eigen numbers are simultaneously resonant at approximately the same frequency in the two sections, and circuitry for generating an axial magnetic field within the cavity. Few, if any, combinations of modes other than the combination chosen will simultaneously resonate in the cavity thereby effecting higher order mode suppression. The present design has a low susceptibility to beam velocity spread and is effective for any combination of modes with identical azimuthal eigen numbers.
"What I really hope is what were doing with these early commercial researchers, there will one day be way more than the ISS can handle, Michael Read, who manages National Lab, an economic development program of the ISS, told The Christian Science Monitor in January.
She was an incredible swimmer, her achievements were seemingly endless and well deserved, a lovely and charming person and a great inspiration to all who were lucky enough to meet her, said Channel Swimming Association president Michael Read. She was wonderful ambassador for our sport.
