Abstract:

A cobalt-phosphorous-boron coating and a process for plating that is environmentally acceptable are provided. Furthermore, a cobalt-phosphorous plating solution is provided to deposit the cobalt-phosphorous-boron coating during the plating process on a surface of an article of manufacture. The cobalt-phosphorous plating solution does not contain chemicals presently restricted in use by the EPA. The cobalt-phosphorous-boron coating is a wear resistant coating with engineering properties, for example, low compressive residual stress, excellent adhesion to ferrous and nickel alloys, low fatigue debit, and a corrosion resistant crack-free structure, that meet or exceed the engineering properties of hard chromium plating intended for use in the aerospace industry. Furthermore, the cobalt-phosphorous plating process uses facilities and equipment that are comparable to those of the chromium plating process, and therefore, may be easily, readily, and economically introduced and implemented, for example, in the aerospace industry.

Abstract:

Cobalt-phosphorous-boron coated objects and processes for production of the same. The coatings are wear resistant and may have several characteristics that render them suitable for applications in certain industries, such as the aerospace industry. The manufacturing process for the coated objects is free of hexavalent chromium fumes generation. The process of manufacture includes the steps of at least partially submerging a metal object as a cathodic element into a plating bath. The plating bath includes an aqueous solution of cobalt ions, chloride ions, phosphate ions, phosphite ions and boron-containing ions. The plating bath may have a pH in the range from about 1.0 to about 1.8. Current flows between an anode in the plating bath and the cathodic element in contact with an object to be coated for a time sufficient to deposit a cobalt-phosphorous-boron coating on the object. The current continues to flow until a coating of desired thickness is obtained.

Abstract:

A method for plating a metallic material onto a titanium substrate, wherein the titanium substrate includes an outer surface and an oxide layer on the outer surface. The method includes chemically etching the outer surface of the titanium substrate to remove at least a portion of the oxide layer, thereby yielding an etched titanium substrate. The method also includes establishing a cathodic protection current through the etched titanium substrate while the etched titanium substrate is immersed in a cathodic electrolyte solution. The method further includes strike plating a bond promoter layer onto the outer surface of the etched titanium substrate after the establishing of the cathodic protection current. The method lastly includes plating the metallic material onto the bond promoter layer.

Abstract:

A method of coating a composite material and an associated coated composite structure are disclosed to provide increased wear resistance and surface protection. The edge of the composite material may be coated so as to provide protection for the edge. A method of coating a composite material includes applying an adhesion promotion layer to the composite material. The adhesion promotion layer includes a binder paint and a plurality of metal particles within the binder paint. The metal particles may be irregularly shaped. The method also includes applying a thermal spray coating to the adhesion promotion layer. The thermal spray coating may include a twin wire arc bond coating on the adhesion promotion layer and a high velocity oxygen fuel spray coating on the twin wire arc bond coating.
