Abstract:

A gap soliton can be controlled by introducing a perturbation into a waveguide structure that includes an otherwise essentially periodic variation of its refractive index. In one embodiment of our invention, by controlling the amplitude, phase and/or average value of the refractive index of a first perturbation, and by maintaining the speed of the soliton below a certain critical speed, we have found that the soliton will transfer its energy to the modes of the perturbation. When the soliton transfers essentially all of its energy in this way, we refer to the soliton as being trapped or captured by the perturbation. Trapped gap solitons enable a variety of unique system applications in, for example, memories, buffers, switches and WDM demultiplexers.

Abstract:

An antenna having a dual-band driven element and a second antenna element simultaneously produces a directional radiation pattern at an upper frequency and an omnidirectional radiation pattern at a lower frequency. The dual-band driven element is formed as a dipole or monopole with at least one choke connected to the end of the dipole or monopole. In an exemplary embodiment, the dual-band driven element includes a central dipole or monopole that has chokes formed as u-shaped extensions located at the ends of the central antenna dipole or monopole. An antenna array includes the dual-band driven element and a second driven antenna element with a reflector and/or a director in a Yagi-Uda configuration. An antenna array includes the dual-band driven element with a reflector or with a reflector and a director in a Yagi-Uda configuration.

An antenna array system includes a launcher comprising an antenna configured to establish and steer a wavefront, and an array of Yagi-Uda director trains coupled to the launcher and located in the path of the wavefront. The array of Yagi-Uda director trains is configured to influence a beamwidth of the launcher. A method for beam steering includes launching a wavefront generated by an antenna through an array of director elements, and steering the wavefront.
