Abstract:
A technique that may be used to limit the amount of flooding that occurs for a particular virtual local area network (VLAN) in a data network. Limits are established for VLANs processed by an intermediate node. Each limit indicates a number of forwarding database entries that may be associated with a particular VLAN. If the number of entries in the forwarding database reaches the limit established for a particular VLAN, an action is taken which may include limiting the amount of flooding that occurs for that VLAN.

Abstract:
A technique transfers data between geographically dispersed entities belonging to a virtual-local-area network (VLAN). According to the technique, geographically dispersed entities communicate via software-defined virtual ports that “appear” as physical ports to the entities. Each virtual port, in turn, is associated with one or more connections wherein each connection may be associated with one or more VLANs. Data generated on a particular VLAN that is destined for a remote entity is forwarded to a virtual port which, in turn, transfers the data to the remote entity over the connection associated with the VLAN. Moreover, state is maintained at each virtual port for each connection, thereby enabling the virtual ports to support various protocols that operate with physical ports.

Abstract:
According to the present invention, methods and apparatus are provided to allow efficient switching of frames for transmission between a Layer 2 Virtual Local Area Network such as a Metro Ethernet Network and an external network. Reserved inner tags are used to identify particular services. In one example, inner tags allow mapping of frames associated with a particular subnetwork onto a particular virtual circuit associated with an ATM network.

Abstract:
A corrosion-resistant granular magnetic recording medium with improved recording performance comprises a non-magnetic substrate having a surface; and a layer stack on the substrate surface, including, in order from the surface: a granular magnetic recording layer; an intermediate magnetic de-coupling layer; and a corrosion preventing magnetic cap layer. The intermediate magnetic de-coupling layer has an optimal thickness and/or composition for: (1) promoting magnetic exchange de-coupling between the granular magnetic recording layer and the magnetic cap layer; and (2) reducing the dynamic closure field (H) for determining writeability and eraseability of the medium. Grain boundaries of the magnetic cap layer are substantially oxide-free, and have a greater density and lower average porosity and surface roughness than those of the granular magnetic recording layer.

Abstract:
A method of load distribution for a cluster of two or more nodes. The method comprises receiving an initial request packet on a network device having a virtual IP address; forwarding the request packet from the network device to a cluster of at least two nodes, wherein each of the at least two nodes has an internal dispatcher module and an unique and non-conflicting virtual IP address; establishing one of the at least two nodes as a priority dispatcher or dispatcher endpoint, wherein if any one node fails, the virtual IP address of the one node which is no longer active falls back to another node within the cluster based on cluster priorities; dispatching the request packet to one of the nodes associated with the cluster; and forwarding the request from one of the nodes to a switching device.

Abstract:
A method of application level content routing using a (Dynamic VPN) dual-proxy mechanism that provides a client access to resources on a remote network without exposing each other's actual IP addresses and network topologies. The method includes providing a client a list of available resources on a remote network; initiating a request by the client for at least one resource from the list of available resources hosted on the remote network as though the at least one resource is local to the client; routing the request to the at least remote resource through a secure connection between the client and the remote network; responding to the request by the at least remote resource as though the request is initiated locally on the remote network; and routing the response from the remote network back to the client through the secure connection.
