    H02B 104
  • US Classification:
    200 50AA
  • Abstract:
The inventions solves the problem of convenient mounting of parts of controllers, and solves the problem of interchangeability of vacuum and air break contactors within a controller. A controller has a housing, an isolation switch mounted within the housing, a contactor mounted within the housing and connected electrically downstream from the isolation switch, and the controller has a receptacle which can accept either a vacuum contactor or an air break contactor. Also, the contactor has an operating coil and control components mounted on a side facing a door of the housing so that the coil can be replaced and the control components serviced without disturbing the contactor.

  • US Patent:
    48431940, Jun 27, 1989
  • Filed:
    Feb 18, 1988
  • Appl. No.:
    7/161235
  • Inventors:
Miklos J. Orosz - Columbia SC
  • Assignee:
Square D Company - Palatine IL
  • International Classification:
    H01H 944
  • US Classification:
    200144C
  • Abstract:
Access to the arc chutes of a contactor is provided by mounting the arc chutes along with insulating plates on the top surface of a frame which supports the parts of the contactor. A track is formed as a pair of grooves in a top surface of the frame. The arc chutes have projections on each side which fit into the grooves of the track so that the arc chute may stand on the top surface of the frame of the contactor. Insulating plates are mounted in sockets made into the top surface of the frame and provide electrical insulation for the arc chutes.
  • Door Mounted Circuit Breaker Operating Apparatus

    view source
  • US Patent:
    46124241, Sep 16, 1986
  • Filed:
    Oct 31, 1984
  • Appl. No.:
    6/666945
  • Inventors:
Michael R. Clark - Columbia SC
    Dominick Tringali - Columbia SC
Fredrick E. Woodlief - Lexington SC
Miklos J. Orosz - Columbia SC
  • Assignee:
Square D Company - Palatine IL
  • International Classification:
    H01H 920
  • US Classification:
    200 50A
  • Abstract:
The invention has an enclosure, a circuit breaker mounted inside the enclosure, and a hand lever rotatably mounted upon a door of the enclosure. A drive shaft is rotatably attached at a first end to the circuit breaker so that rotation of the drive shaft operates the circuit breaker. When the door is closed a second end of the drive shaft seats in a socket in the hand lever, and rotation of the hand lever rotates the drive shaft. A spring clip is mounted within the hand lever, and the spring clip grips the second end of the drive shaft so that force applied by the hand lever to rotate the drive shaft may deform the spring clip thereby permitting deflection in a coupling between the hand lever and the drive shaft. A retainer plate attached to the hand lever catches the drive shaft when the spring clip is deformed by the force and thereby prevents opening of the door as a safety measure. The drive shaft has a reduced cross-section region between the first end and the second end.
  • Floating Jaw Retention Springs For A Switch

  • US Patent:
    47662760, Aug 23, 1988
  • Filed:
    Jul 12, 1985
  • Appl. No.:
    6/754877
  • Inventors:
Michael R. Clark - Columbia SC
    Fred Erb - Columbia SC
Miklos J. Orosz - Columbia SC
  • Assignee:
Square D Company - Palatine IL
  • International Classification:
    H01H 150
    H01H 142
    H01H 2154
  • US Classification:
    200256
  • Abstract:
The invention solves the problem of loss of contact between jaws of a stationary contact with a switchblade of a knife switch when the switchblade undergoes lateral motion, as for example, under the influence of electromagnetic forces during short circuit conditions. A jaw for a switch has a base, a pair of electrically conducting jaws for accepting a blade of a switch between the jaws, a pin mounted in a hole passing through the base; retention springs mounted on the pin and producing force against the jaws so as to maintain electrical contact between the jaws and the switchblade, wherein the pin may slide in the hole in the base so that the jaws may follow lateral motion of the switchblade.
  • Contactor Having A Z-Shaped Current Path For Blow-Out Force Reduction

    view source
  • US Patent:
    46350144, Jan 6, 1987
  • Filed:
    Jul 12, 1985
  • Appl. No.:
    6/754874
  • Inventors:
    Fred Erb - Columbia SC
Miklos J. Orosz - Columbia SC
  • Assignee:
Square D Company - Palatine IL
  • International Classification:
    H01H 300
  • US Classification:
    335195
  • Abstract:
The electromagnetic forces tending to force open the contacts of an electromagnetic contactor are reduced by providing a current flow path having a geometry that tends to minimize the magnetically produced forces acting upon the movable contact of an electromagnetic contactor. A contactor has a frame, a stationary contact attached to the frame, a first conductor supplying the stationary contact, an armature rotatably mounted in the frame, a movable contact attached to the armature, and a second conductor supplying the movable contact. An arm has a first arm end supporting the movable contact and a second arm end attached to the armature. A rod conductor is attached to the frame at a point near to the movable contact when the movable contact is in an open position, a flexible link having a first link end is attached to the arm near the second arm end, and is attached at a second link end to the rod conductor located near the movable contact so that current flow through the arm is substantially anti-parallel to current flow through the flexible link thereby permitting at least a partial cancellation of magnetic forces generated by current flow from the arm, through the flexible link, and through the rod conductor.
  • High Voltage Motor Starter Enclosure

  • US Patent:
    40902307, May 16, 1978
  • Filed:
    Feb 10, 1977
  • Appl. No.:
    5/767278
  • Inventors:
Frederick B. Fuller - Columbia SC
Miklos J. Orosz - Columbia SC
Richard H. Williams - Columbia SC

  • Assignee:
Square D Company - Park Ridge IL
  • International Classification:
    H02B 114
  • US Classification:
    361345
  • Abstract:
A high voltage motor starter enclosure includes a floor mounted vertical section consisting of three starter cells, stacked one on top of the other, each cell being suitable to mount one full voltage, non-reversing, squirrel cage starter having a contactor of the air break type. Each starter cell consists of four distinct, isolated compartments: a line and vertical bus compartment containing space for incoming line cables and vertical bus; a load compartment containing space for starter current transformers and motor cables for individual starters; a low voltage control compartment having a drawout, swing-open compartment door (panel) to provide easy access to meters, relays, pilot devices and terminal blocks for inspection and maintenance thereof; and a high voltage contactor compartment containing mechanical and electrical interlocks to minimize electrical hazards, a hinged door to provide easy access to a contactor and related component parts, and to the line and vertical bus, and load compartments by removing barrier cover plates. Wheel assemblies are mounted on each contactor so that the contactor rolls into both fully engaged and disengaged positions upon a contactor rail assembly which is part of a removable tray positioned beneath the contactor to support the same. The removable tray further includes several mechanical interlocks, a shutter operator mechanism for operating a shutter plate assembly to isolate the line and load terminals from the contactor, a positive ground connection assembly so that the contactor is grounded in the engaged and disengaged positions, a contactor stop assembly, and a bottom barrier plate for isolating the high voltage contactor compartments of each cell from one another.
