Abstract:
External cavity semiconductor lasers using a saturable Bragg reflector as an external reflector are mode locked and produce output pulses of 1. 9 ps from a semiconductor lasers without dispersion compensation. By coupling the output to a standard single mode fiber with a length of 35 m to compensate the linear chirp, the mode-locked pulse duration as short as 880 fs is achieved.

Abstract:
A micromachined plate called a torsion plate, selectively pivots upon a substrate responsively to electrical force so as to move an attached micromirror in a same plane; thereby to accurately selectively intercept, and to reflect, a light beam that is moving parallel to the substrate; forming thus an optomechanical switch The electrical force may be electromagnetic in nature or, preferably, electrostatic. In various embodiments the pivoting torsion plate with the micromirror affixed may be (i) biased off the substrate by a three-dimensional structure and/or by a âreshapedâ torsion beam (ii) bent as plate and operated push OR pull, push AND pull, or push AND push, in a rocking operation, (iii) elevated above the substrate upon a self-assembling âmicro-elevator structureâ and/or (iv) moved greatly in angular position by action of a âmicro-flapâ A new design spring-loaded landing electrode and a torsion microhinge - further enhance performance. The micromachined, or Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS), optomechanical switch so formed is both fast and accurate to switch light over large angles up to 180Â while being highly resistant to sticking, or âstictionâ.

Abstract:
In at least one embodiment, a MEMS optomechanical switch in accordance with the present invention includes a substrate, a signal source capable of transmitting a radiation signal, an electrode coupled to the substrate, and a micromachined plate rotatably coupled to the substrate about a pivot axis. The switch further includes a micromirror having an orientated reflective surface, mounted to the micromachined plate and an electrical source coupled to at least one of the electrode and the micromachined plate.
Mems Tunable Capacitor Based On Angular Vertical Comb Drives
A MEMS tunable capacitor with angular vertical comb-drive (AVC) actuators is described where high capacitances and a wide continuous tuning range is achieved in a compact space. The comb fingers rotate through a small vertical angle which allows a wider tuning range than in conventional lateral comb drive devices. Fabrication of the device is straightforward, and involves a single deep reactive ion etching step followed by release and out-of-plane assembly of the angular combs.

Abstract:
An etalon has an effective cavity length that can be tuned to compensate for temperature-dependent frequency shift and/or for random variations in the manufacturing process. The effective cavity length of an etalon is adjusted by changing the orientation of a tuning plate positioned in the etalon cavity. A screw adjustment and bending beam spring are used to change tuning plate orientation and precisely tune the etalon resonance frequency after the manufacturing process has been completed. Orientation of the tuning plate is adjusted during operation of the etalon using a passive thermal compensation mechanism, such as a bimetal support arm, which is fixed to the tuning plate and configured to reposition the tuning plate with changing temperature.

Abstract:
Some embodiments of the invention are directed to electrochemical fabrication methods for forming structures or devices (e. g. microprobes for use in die level testing of semiconductor devices) from a core material and a shell or coating material that partially coats the surface of the structure. Other embodiments are directed to electrochemical fabrication methods for producing structures or devices (e. g. microprobes) from a core material and a shell or coating material that completely coats the surface of each layer from which the probe is formed including interlayer regions. Additional embodiments of the invention are directed to electrochemical fabrication methods for forming structures or devices (e. g. microprobes) from a core material and a shell or coating material wherein the coating material is located around each layer of the structure without locating the coating material in inter-layer regions. Each of these groups of embodiments incorporate both the core material and the coating material during the formation of each layer and each layer is also formed with a sacrificial material that is removed after formation of all layers of the structure.

Abstract:
Described are tunable multiport optical filters that filter systems with many optical channels in a convenient and cost-effective manner. The tunable multiport optical filters of the invention are simple in design and have few optical components. The basic elements are a dispersion element and a rotating reflector. With properly arranged arrays of input and output optical fibers, individual wavelength components from a selected input beam are spatially separated and steered by the rotating reflector to selected output locations. The optical properties from the selected components may be measured by one or more photodetectors. The filters are also useful for selecting and routing optical signals.

Abstract:
Various embodiments of a tissue cutting device are described, such as a device with an elongate tube having a proximal end and a distal end and a central axis extending from the proximal end to the distal end; a first annular element at the distal end of the elongate tube, the first annular element having a flat portion at its distal end perpendicular to the central axis, the flat portion extending from an outer circumference of the first annular element to the central axis; and a second annular element at the distal end of the elongate tube and concentric with the first annular element, the second annular element having a flat portion at its distal end perpendicular to the central axis, at least one of the first or second annular elements rotatable about the central axis, the rotation causing the first annular element and the second annular element to pass each other to shear tissue.
